I read the faq here for hunter professions, but it didnt help much. I was thinking Skinning/LW, but hear it tapers off around 40 because most armor sets are more for shaman. I wanted a profession I could use to help my character, and make a bit of money.

I definitely want to take 1 gathering and 1 crafting. I was thinking maybe engineering but hear its expensive. Alchemy I heard wasnt as useful. But Enchanting or JC looked interesting but dont look viable until higher levels, can anyone give me some advice? Thanks.

You won't make much money with gathering/crafting. Hell, you'll probably lose quite a bit.

Engineering really as bad as everybody suggests if you just powerlevel and don't go after all the nifty toy as you're going. I can tell you from personal experience JC sucks ever since epic gems became purchasable on QD, before that I was making pretty decent cash, now I really have difficulty selling any gems at all (though I'm sure a decent amount of that is the malaise that everybody has waiting on WotLK). Alchemy is always useful. Enchanting sucks until you're capped and start getting the harder to find recipes.

Skin/LW is pretty much the best way to go. You've got the craftable epic set at 70, and, I'm sure, another 80, drums, armor kits, and skinning is pretty good money when you don't need the leather.

Enchanting still sucks when you're capped and getting rare formulas. The real reason to go for Enchanting is for Disenchanting. I can't wait until I can pick up Inscriptions to go along with enchanting so I can sell them on the AH.

Alchemy is really fun and useful.

Skinning/LW is probably the safest one to go with. I haven't seen any hunters regret LW.

I have recently been setting up my hunter alts with different trades just to try out the trades .

Skinning/Leatherworking: although there is a lot of stuff that is not great for a Hunter the patches and drums are useful and a few top level items are good enough to use in end game instances ( BC not sure about the King ) i make reasonable gold from sellable items and leather always sells well.

Engineering is good for a hunter when combined with Mining , no you will not make a lot of gold from Engineering but if you levelled an alt with it at level 30 you get a Whelp pet that will fight for you and some fun bombs to make , and if you like guns and sights and bullets they are useful for my hunter alt , so although not a trade that is a gold mine , but fun for the things you can use to make levelling easier , and the end game fun stuff is a sweet bonus, the money will mostly be made from selling the mining stuff you do not need , copper ore/bars ect. I think with care and farming more ore than you need you should be able to level Engineering without costing you a small fortune , i have tried it twice and i spent around 250g the first time powering it to 300 as i was low level and buying stuff from auction but it can be done without buying a great deal of stuff as i now know as my level 32 hunter is fully maxed out for her level , i cannot wait for level 35 to start raising it again.

Enchanting at the moment with the disenchanting factor can and does make reasonable gold and i have a level 39 Mage that makes some agility enchants for my hunters so it is useful for a hunter , the extra gold from disenchanting the soulbound stuff does add up to a good amount of gold over time , if i did not have a Mage doing it i would have set up a hunter alt to do it as i think it is worth it.As an example i made over 7000g just from disenchanting by level 39 , i cannot say if that will still be possible when the king comes out though but it shows it can be done.

Blacksmithing i would say is about the most useless of all the trades apart from Tailoring for a hunter so those can be ignored .

Jewelcrafting does have a few nice things for Hunters and gold can be made but not so easy while low level as people tend to flood the market with the easily made stuff .

Alchemy can be good for a hunter and the herbs will be selling at high prices for a while when the King goes live , there are quite a few things that can sell well while you level , and of course as you pick herbs your pet does help protect you or clears the way easier than most other classes.

The biggest problem i have as a Hunter with any gathering trade is "wow my bags are full yet again" but i get that happen all the time even when not gathering stuff for a trade .

I hope my thoughts are helpful to you.

As others have said gathering trades are probably better to make gold with , but some trades are good as well to help you level..

I disagree with this. My hunter is an alchemist/herbalist, and I love it. In the lower levels the potions are great for saving your butt in a bind, and at the higher levels they can give you a huge advantage. I love the Elixer of Major Agility! Imo I make plenty of money selling herbs. On my server, it isn't as profitable to sell the potions as the herbs. I just stockpile potions on my bank alt, and then I am free to sell the herbs I gather until my stash is running low.
I've also found alchemy to be extremely usefull to my alts. Its much cheaper to make mana potions for my priest than buy them from the auction house. I don't feel like I have to obsessivly conserve them.

JC/Ench if you are a min/maxer, JC/LW if you need drums, and either mining/jc, or mining/herb for money.

This is a bit OT because I just feel like writing my opinion from a point of mid level enjoyment:

Alchemy (priest) is super because you can buff. I tend to be generous and give potions to my parties and guilds, though I am self serving in wanting more powerful groups. That is a good justification because few people much appreciate potions. I do love the square bottles, light bulbs, and hub caps. A guild mate and I hung out and chatted in the corals of Vile Reef. That would not have happened otherwise.

Engineering (rogue) makes me laugh, and there is nothing like the silly target dummy. Still, target dummies seem to be seldom used; once the tank stopped fighting to watch some hounds go at it. What fun props! That little trash can harvest reaper is cute and noisy. If there was a hug emote to really pick him up he would get one. Dragonling does not last long, has a fat belly, and can't be faulted. He is a Trinket. There are other neat things and explosive diversions, often useless, none really needed, but all terrific.

Jewelcrafting (shaman) is immediately rewarding and it is interesting to perform. I have not raised it much but needed the gem skill for engineering. This requires mining but my engineer can provide ores and she will now take inscription.

My BF sells skins. With the alts we made last night he chose that profession again. It must be lucrative. Mining makes me more money then herbs did before patch, but I price gouged herb stock the night of the reboot and have not been back to gathering. Playing my hunter who skins and makes leathers for the synergy of all above, I have no savings much, but rarely need anything for long.

I would not do this until you get close to 70, if not 70. The best advice I ever received was to go with Skinning/Mining AND SELL everything. After getting to heavy leather and mithril mining, money starts to flow pretty quickly and you can buy any gear you may want/need. You will be in the 100's of gold so fast, your head will spin. Plus, while grinding leather, you will get green/blue drops that can be sold or D/E'd for even MORE gold. Besides, hunters level so fast that any craftable gear you need is out of date pretty quickly.

By the time you ding 70, you will have a huge sum of gold to powerlevel a crafting prof that interests you. Engineering is pricey but the toys are pretty cool, goes along well with mining.

I still have skinning for the knothide leather & clefthoof leather (terrific sellers and SUPER EASY to grind) and leatherworking to make THICK knothide and make whatever epic patterns I may want. The drums are great in instances/raids. I compared skinning to mining and found that knothide is much more readily available than mining nodes, plus you don't have to fight over them or wait for them to re-spawn. I get a stack of knothide in about 10 minutes or less. For a short amount of time, you can average 100G+ per day without breaking a sweat.

Happy Hunting!

Skinning and leatherworking is quite good.

You can make some nice money from just selling heavy leather, before you look into the orange recipes.

Also, it's worth point out that skinning gives the nice: Master of Anatomy

Of course you can choose whatever you want, but that's a very nice profession combo!
