Stats that'll increase the duration of Fear?Follow

What stats would I need to raise on my warlock to make fear last longer and have a smaller chance of breaking? Penetration? Intellect? Spirit? Are there any trinkets that can accomplish this?

none. use dots over direct damage and come next patch, get the glyph that increases the damage fear can take by 20% before breaking.

As a warlock noob, why? Is it so that if a DOT doesn't break fear on the first tick, it won't break fear at all? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Fear has a higher chance to break for attacks that deal higher damage per hit.

Fear has a much lower chance to break from a 2k over 18 seconds corruption than a 2k shadowbolt, for instance.

yes and no to the above post.

fear has a highier chance to break from 1000 damage done directly every 1.5 seconds (say by casting searing pain) than by taking 1000 damage every 1.5 seconds by a dot (there isn't any dot that ticks like this, but it's the idea that counts). 'tis how fear works currently.

i THINK (don't quote me, haven't tested it or read anything on it) that come the wotlk content patch, fear will simply break on a predetermined amount of damage, which can be increased by 20% by the fear glyph.

Fear currently has what we call a "heartbeat resist check" - meaning, it can take some damage or no damage or a lot of damage before it breaks. Generally, it works that the more damage it takes at one time (e.g., direct damage), the more likely it will break. However, because of the heartbeat resist check, it may or may not break with any damage taken at all (this is one of the reasons people don't like Fear cc much).

Jenova is correct, though; the mechanic is being changed such that Fear is getting an actual damage cap, a percentage based on the target's maximum health.

Thanks for enlightening me there, it's good to know. Same thing as a mage's Frost Nova then.

No, CoEl will not have Fear guarantee a full duration. CoEl only helps with mobs that have innate shadow resistance - and they are few and far between.

as wings said, CoE only helps to land a spell, not to increase it's duration. 'heart break' resists are random and unpredictable. the rest are based on damage and the type of damage. and soon they'll be based on the amount of damage too.

Correct. Fear has dual break mechanics; both the heartbeat breaks as well as a random damage cap (of which no one can currently figure out). Giving it something more stable is a good thing, imo (makes it easier to control mobs with Fear cc).

I was chatting with a lock in guild who's done some tests with the glyph, supposedly that 20% increase is making a big difference, so imo that must mean that the 'base damage' of fear must be fairly high... 5k+

IIRC, I heard it was something like 20% of target's maximum hp. =\
