Need Some Help On CCFollow

#1 Oct 01 2008 at 9:16 AM Rating: Good
I have been having a lot of trouble lately trying to do my end of CC.I am not very use to the whole trapping and kiting them around because when I was in my group when I was leveling I was never asked to do it and now 70 I'm of course having problems with it.Traps breaking because when the tank pulls them back I get the wrong one in the trap and some is attacking it or not being able to trap casters.I'm a BM hunter so I don't have silencing shot to hit the casters with.I tried to do it with my pets intimidation and run up and trap but I had a problem with aggroing other mobs.So any help at all would be great like things to practice on and what try doing thanks.

-Set your traps in an out-of-the-way spot. A bit further back than the tank will be pulling, for instance, or just around a corner.

-Stand next to the tank before he goes to pull, or a bit further back--when the mob you are assigned to trap is in range, arcane shot, distracting shot--anything instant and single target (no aimed shot or multi)--and step back behind your trap. Don't forget to turn auto-shot off before the mob is trapped, or you could break your own trap.

-Casters are tricky--if the room is fairly empty, running up and dropping a trap on top of them can work (and that's pretty much what you will have to do for the second trap anyway) but it's best to use line-of-sight to pull them around a corner and over your trap. (A good place to practice this might be with the caster mobs on the IoQD--do into one of the blood elf buildings and learn how to LoS the casters there.)

-If someone breaks your trap, that's their fault, not yours. Unfortunately, unlike a mage who can re-sheep very quickly, traps have a nasty cooldown. So, it's best to lay your trap long enough before the pull that the cooldown is up by the time your mob gets trapped--this lets you lay down another trap to keep it trapped longer (unless it's a caster, you can set the second trap several yards away so that you have more time on the cooldown for the third), and it means that you can re-trap if it breaks before you're ready.

-If your trap target is a real pain, you can always try setting the trap further back, telling your pet to stay behind it, and misdirecting to your pet. This makes re-trapping a little trickier in my opinion, but it can still work nicely.

This is very helpfull.

I'd also like to add that it's very useful to set your traps way ahead of time, so your cooldown will be expired once your mob hits your trap, thus giving you the opportunity to set a new trap right away (especially useful when your initial trap gets resisted). Don't hesitate to ask your to wait a few secs for your trap cd, if he doesn't, it's not your fault if your chain-trapping fails.

really nice graphical presentation of this on TKA:

Now I thought there use to be one for trapping Caster mobs with line of sight, but I don't see it there. Maybe it was just a regular post that someone did.

I have been using a trap mod called INgensu recently, its quite helpful with its timers and party announcements.

I posted this a while ago. Enjoy

here's some pictures for trapping that people said are fairly useful

You probably want to to fire more then one arrow at the mob, if you have time to ensure the healer doesn't peel it off. I usually hit steady shot and then spam arcane so that you get 3 hits off at once for a bunch of threat. If you are MM then you can also use silencing shot to pull the caster mobs towards you.

Always put traps away from the group, and plan your kite path so that the location of the second trap is between the mob and where you will be firing at the other enemies.

Some good replies in this thread. The only thing I can really add is the importance of practice.

You don't have to wait until you're in a group to practice trapping and kiting. You can do it anywhere there's mobs. Nagrand is great due to the amount of open space. Pick a mob and see how long you can keep it on ice without it ever reaching you.

IMO trapping is more useful to have down than kiting as it's one of the best CCs in the game. So I'd focus on getting that down first. Luckily it's also a little easier than kiting too. If you can get 2 pieces of the Hunter dungeon blue set, IIRC it reduces the cooldown on traps which is handy when learning.

That's not to say kiting isnt useful, and can sometimes be the difference between a good hunter and a really good hunter. Again, Nagrand would be my prefered spot for practicing this. Try kiting a Clefthoof to Shattrath or something. It can definitely be done, but someone usually ends up killing it every time I've tried.

BRK has some pretty well done tutorial videos on chain trapping and jumpshot kiting if you want to check those out.

And on a final note, don't be afraid when in in instance to ask the leader if you can be given non-caster mobs to trap. Sometimes it's unavoidable, such as in MgT. So it is important to learn LoS trapping, but it is undeniably messier for non-MM Hunters. And a lot of the time, other classes just aren't aware that trapping casters is harder.
