I've been reading the sticky and wondering...

When you achieve 102.4% avoidance w/holy shield and a 490 def...does that mean that you cant be hit since it pushes reg hit, crushing blows and crits off the attack table?

that means you can't be crit, crushed or take a regular hit (except for aoe situations where your HS runs out before 8 secs). you will still take damage from blocked hits, but it will be reduced hits due to the block. only way to never be hit is to get dodge/parry/miss alone over 102.4% without taking block or HS into account, which is nearly impossible for any tank.

I forgot about blocked hit still dealing damage.

But sometimes I seem to block the entire hit while other times I'll only block for whatever my block value is. What determines this occurance?

I am not totally sure of the mechanics involved in calculating a percentage of damage impeeded by a block... probably has to do with the RNG somehow (random number generator)...

I also seem to block all damage on occasion, while only blocking partial damage most of the time. The only reason I can think of for this variablility is the RNG, although someone more enlightened on block mechanics can certainly correct me if i am wrong -- wouldn't be the first time :)

I thought all blocking was calculated by:

X = [(Shield block value) + (Strength / 20)]

This is after any mitigation (such as armor reduction, BoS, Imp RF, etc...). If you completely blocked a hit, then I thought the hit was for less damage than the equation above.

I'm not aware of any "partial blocking" mechanic (similar to "partial resisting"), but I could have just missed it.

You'll usually not take damage on a block while soloing, because normal mobs at your level should be hitting for less than your damage reduction and block value.

I sit at 105% avoidance and 335 block value. A raid boss even as early as Attumen still hits me for about 1800 on a block. He also crits for around 4k. I know, because I sit down a lot while fighting him..

Nightbane hits for 4k blocks, 7k crushings when holy shield didn't get clicked hard enough. :-\

this is correct to the best of my knowledge. our armor mitigate a lot the damage so when it gets to the block its possible to block the entire remaining amount. for example, you have 500 BV and 15000 armor (aprx 60% mitigation). mob hits for 1000. armor reduces it to 400 which is less than your block so you block it all. mob its for 2000. armor reduces it to 800 you block 500 and get hit for 300 and laugh because at 15000 hp it barely makes a dent... boss hits for 15000 armor reduces it to 6000 you block for 500 and get hit for 5500 and stop laughing.... but you're a pally so you're glad you'll now get 550 mana back as long as your healers are on top of things...

sorry.. started answering and it turned into me having fun with numbers again... lol
