Why do hunters have such a bad reputation?

They are the most common class and get chosen by first time players frequently. This is mainly due to the ease of solo play with the class being ranged and having a pet. This lends hunters to neglect learning many of the subtleties of their class.

The class is very easy to level with and BG with which results in many hunters being level 70 and having full BG epics. Unfortunately, many of these people never really learned who to play their class well, especially in a group dynamic. The intricacies of kiting, trapping, shot rotations and pet management are easy to learn but very hard to learn well.

A skilled hunter is always welcome in my groups. They can do many things and can be extremely valuable for both CC, DPS and pulling. They however are not in the majority. As learning the skills to be an excellent hunter take practice and dedication which many of the casuals don't take the time to learn and perfect.

This results in a large amount of geared hunters who can't play for beans. Thus, the huntard label.

Just by posting here and hopefully reading the stickies I will hope that you have the desire to not be a huntard. So welcome to the forums.

What is trolling? And I thought I would ask the valid question since on most boards Ive been on they call hunters, huntards. To me that says the reputation isnt the best.

Trolling: The act of posting with intent to obtain a significant negative reaction from the board members by bringing up a subject that is predujicial or offensive to their members.

Now, in this case, you feel you are asking a legitimate question. We do get quite a few trolls around here though so a question like yours tends to be taken as a troll question.

Hunters should NOT be singled out as having a 'bad reputation', at least no more so than any other class. A Huntard is just someone who is clueless on how to play the class or someone who intentionally missplays it for purposes of 'fun'. Generally, we don't include Role-Player hunters in this category as they could be following whatever character motives drive their play.

Hunters HAVE the 'bad reptuation' because as has been said, it is a popular class for newer players due to the "Legolas" effect but unless you count Gimli (in Peter Jackson's version of LotR) as his 'pet' then I don't really see it beyond having a ranged weapon. So while there is probably a higher percentage of hunters being played, the percentage of the clueless playing them is probably about the same as any other class. I can't say this for a fact because nobody has done a statistical analisys that I am aware of...

So, while your question is simple, it is answered in full in the "Every question answered here" sticky that is at the top of the forum. Take a browse through it, and when you have questions after reading that, you'll probably find the crowd around here a bit less trigger happy on the troll response... ^_^

I also think hunter mistakes are more visible to the group than mistakes by other classes. A rogue missed his haste finishing move? Oh, the calamity! His DPS went down somewhat for the next several seconds. A hunter misdirecting on the healer instead of the tank will get the ire of the entire party when it wipes.
