I'm confused about tanking builds. Please help meFollow

I am the MT for a small guild. I tank all the 5-man reg runs. About a month ago I was had problems losing aggro to some of the better geared DPS'ers. I had been stacking as much avoidance and defense as I could. One of the DPS had someone look at my build and I was advised to stack more spell damage.

So for the past month I have been reworking my build to gain more spell damage. I have the SSO neck and shield, but other than that it is all Outland blues.

So last night I tanked Sethek Halls for a friends guild. Afterward they advised me I need more defense, and that I need to get rid of the healing gear. With all the buffs I was over 500 spell damage.

I have read the guides and am trying to upgrade, but I have a limited amount of people available for runs so I take what I can get.

I know the Sanctified Orb is the wrong trinket, and that some of the enchants are wrong. I let a guildy enchant me to level up his enchanting.

I have tried pugging Kara, and I'm embarrassed to say, we wiped on two of the elites in the dining room, not the bosses, just two elites. I'm not going back there without some of my friends.

So please tell me what you think.

Thanks

Hi Mate, I have only had a brief look.

You should get your defense to 490 so you are uncritable, your spell damage is high so the 2 things that come to mind are:

1) because you are eating crits your healer has to work overtime and generates loads of threat, pulling mobs off you to him.

2) your DPS are giving it too much too soon and pulling threat off you.

Work on 490 def to help with point 1 and tell the DPS to give you a few secs to get threat before unloading to help with point 2.

btw the mobs in a raid (eg Kara) are much harder than in 5 mans, to give you an idea:

5 man trash mob health: c12,000
5 Man HC trash mob health: c16-20,000
Lvl 60 raid trash mob health: c45,000 Dunno about lvl 70 raids of which Kara is one of them.

yeah, You are going through the same thing all Pally tanks are going through. Balancing your gear. I'm only 68 right now and I tried going for a ton of +Def. I've got all the gear and I can get to 490 def now if I wanted. But it sux. I have little mana, and my stamina is actually lower when I stack +Def gear. But I am not 70, and I am not planning on jumping into a 25 man raid anytime soon. If you read the guide it gives you a pretty clear idea that you definitely need 490 def for uncritability, and 102% or so total avoidance (Including holy shield) to be uncrushable to bosses. You need only around +200 spell to effectively hold most aggro. That is what you need to Main tank in Kara. I'm not convinced you need that if you are just planning on doing lvl 70 5 man instances. I think you can get away with a lot less.

It's funny... I carry a bag and a half of gear with me at all times. Mixture of +def and +spell. I switch up as needed when running an instance. The constant battle to find the right mix. If I'm having probs with threat, add a touch of +spell. If I'm getting clobbered alot, some +def. But pre-70.. I definitely enjoy having more mana. Less drinking. More chance to keep the consecrates going. Almost never oom. It all depends if your healer can keep up with the damage. I guess I will see what the lvl 70 instances are like when I get there.

Sorry not more help, but you're just going through what we all are. The bane of being a pally tank. :) But it's pretty awesome being able to tank and hold 5 or 6 elites in an instance. :) Our old Druid tank just shakes his head and goes...man...that's freaking amazing. lol.

Actually you look ok. 5 mans for sure. A little hvy in spell damage (as you only really need +200 and you have +321 without the Flask of Blinding Light, nice find by the way... I didn't know about it... though I'm still learning about this game, always).

Your build is pretty good too. I would max out Combat Expertise for sure. Your missing out on 6% extra stam. The fun thing about a pallys health bar, it's like a timer for your healer in Kara. The faster it goes down the less time they have. Samwise has that one correct. Working over 5 mans as a MT and raids really are 2 different things. But you can still perform well in 5 mans with Kara gear, so...

1 finish up your Keeper's of Time rep (to rev) and get Timewarden's Leggings from there.
2 the Cloak of Eternity and Bracers of the Green Fortress you can pick up on the AH, and actually the bracers you can make if you have the pattern.

Those 3 pieces alone will improve your def by 23 and your stam by 53.
You could also get the Continuum Blade from the Keeper's of Time upping your stam another 6 at the price of 5 spell damage.

All gear is from the Def/Mig Sticky Kara ready gear list.

There are a few other pieces that you could replace too, but I would start with those as they really are just a matter of gold and a few BM runs for the Keeper's rep. Remember that you only really need about +200 spell damage... but the agro you say?
I'm thinking it might be 2 things. 1 your spell rotation and 2 your dps just needs to manage their ago better.

One thing to understand is that you shouldn't need anymore mana than what you're born with. On trash mobs I just Seal of Wiz, and don't bother judging. On bosses I use Seal of Vengence, but I don't think you have that yet so Seal of Righteousness (after judging Seal of Crusader) Pull with Avengers Shield every chance you get, Seal up, Consecration ONCE, maybe a second if your agro is still low, and spam lvl 1 Holy Shield. Rinse and repeat.

As for the DPS'ers... well if they have better gear it is partly their responsibilty to watch their agro. I recomend Omen Threat Meter. It's also something you can use to help with your agro.

Remember, when 3.0 comes out your talent tree and spell rotation will change (and you won't need to downgrade your spell lvl either), but the gear is still worth it.

Thanks for all the comments so far. I logged off with my DPS sword, but I use the Mana Wrath for tanking.

Also picked up Slatesteel Boots from an ethereum prison key mob today.

I'll see if i can't get a KoT run soon.

Thanks

Definitely get KoT revered. This will get you the Timewardens leggings and a defensive glyph for your helm. The best Pally tanking blade for right now is probably the Crystalforged Sword off of the AH, since it has both Spell Damage and some block rating. Otherwise you could get the continuum blade with KoT rep as well. I strongly suggest reading Losie's tanking sticky to get to 490 defense and 102.4 avoidance if you are going into Kara... eating crits and crushes just isnt good for your survival or the whole raid's survival basically.

You will need to do some heroics (15 badges for the Libram of Repentance) and 490 defense is necessary for Heroics for sure. You can get away with much lower defense for regular 5-mans, but definitely not in heroics.

I won't give you gear choices in detail because Losie's sticky covers it all wonderfully. You have a lot of the right gear (tho not all of it), and yes, some of your glyphs/enchants are wrong, but not all. You need to switch rings and necklace for defensive/avoidance rings/neck or at least the SSO pendant of resolve instead of accumen, though the accumen one won't kill you if you have the proper defense and avoidance with it still on. Resolve gives a lot more Stam, and a nice dodge proc if you are exalted with the Aldor.

Just for referrence, here is my current Heroics setup (I switch some gear for Kara so I become uncrushable, but I don't need to be uncrushable for Heroics, so I use some gear with higher stam and less avoidance. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Emerald+Dream&n=Arthang When I am doing Kara I switch out the old hilsbrad ring for Andormu's Tear from KoT quests, and I switch the Pendant of Resolve for the CE Rep Neck (Strength of the Untamed) and that gets me to > 102.4% avoidance with holy shield up quite easily.

Also, work on your pulls and spell rotations. Tell your DPS to wait until you throw your shield and consecrate (and the mobs HIT the consecrate area) before they start to DPS... this usually gives you enough of a threat lead for almost any fight. Remember to keep using consecrate occasionally to keep up your threat. If you are not throwing your shield to pull, you aren't going to generate enough threat, and if you aren't consecrating often enough, you aren't geterating enough threat. Also make sure to mark kill order and have the dps follow it (skull then x then star or whatever) so they aren't dpsing the wrong target(s). As you can see from my profile, my spelldamage is only something like 235, and I have no problem holding threat as long as the DPS are doing the things mentioned above (waiting for shield throw AND consecrate and dpsing the correct target/following kill order). Without those 2 things, Chaos tends to ensue. If you haven't read Losie's sticky yet, read it about 3-4 times and you will be amazed at how much it helps. It will be obsolete soon, but if you want to do Kara, it is a HUGE help!

your gear is looking ok, besides the rigs , for a 70 starting to get gear
i won't enter more details about the gear as the above statements are more than enough
but i must point, the talent points that are put wrong:
reckoning = no need for it -> drop it
combat expertise = must be 5/5
spell warding = is also good to take

here is what i have for tank atm: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Sylvanas&n=Fyredeamon
(pls notice that i respec almost daily, depending on guild needs, so you might find me holy with healing gear ^^)

hope it helps

You may also want to consider the merciless mace from the BG;s,the pally tanking one not the healing one there are 2.The righteous shoulders from botanica are good too.
