New Hunter with question about InstancesFollow

#1 Sep 23 2008 at 8:05 AM Rating: Good
Hello there

just did DM with my new hunter (never rolled one before).

Problem was that my pet would follow the runners (it was not on aggressive or growl), causing some rather unpleasant feedback from my group...

Is there a trick to quickly change target for my pet or to disengage it? I mean if things are messy and I see my pet run after a bad guy, is there a fast and easy way to stop it?

Appreciate if someone can educate me!

You make your pet return to you by clicking the passive button on pet tool bar. It's the one to the far right.

Additionally, the reference to Deadmines is generally accepted to be VC, not DM. DM is for a later level instance.

Yes, use the 'follow' or 'stay' command.

Follow brings the pet back to follow you. Default keybinding is <CTRL><2>.
Stay forces the pet to stay right where they are, useful if you are going to retarget them in that general area so they don't have to run back. Default keybinding is <CTRL><3>

I also had this problem early on until someone told me that follow and stay act as interrupts to what the pet is doing.

Umm, no. This varies a lot per server, on one server I play it's called DM, on another one it's VC.

Only idiots complain about pets following runners.

The runner pulled the next pack, not the pet. Pets have far smaller aggro ranges than PCs, and especially smaller than the runner.

If someone complains about my pet pulling a group, and it wasn't me being stupid with Aggressive on, I complain right back about them not keeping the mob from running away.

But yeah, you call your pet back with Follow or Passive. Or you can tell your pet to attack something else.

It's also generally accepted as DM. Your mom answers to ***** but you can call her mom.

Thanks for the correction Thundil, and without reference to my mom.

I too play on two servers and both generally use VC with the occasional player using DM. I didn't think the use of DM vs. VC would be so much a case of server but more an indication of a new player or a an alt. Just trying to help the new guy out.

I find it much more ergonomic to rebind my pet keybindings to ALT instead of CTRL. Alt 2 is so much easier and more comfortable to hit quickly than Ctrl 2.

And it's probably much more common on newer servers for Dead Mines to actually be abbreviated to DM. The reason so many people call it VC is because pre-TBC, Dire Maul was just as popular as Dead Mines- except it was a level 60 instance rather level 16. Since Dire Maul isn't very common anymore, newer players can often get away with DM.

The server that I was referring to has been there from launch, so it's not exactly a new one. I believe the reason why DM is the commonly used abbrevation is that Dire Maul has different wings, so if you were to look for a Dire Maul group you'd say "LFG DM North".

Also, Dire Maul wasn't in the game at release, so back then Deadmines was the only DM, and I am in the habbit of calling it DM to this day.

VC = Van Cleef?

Yes. But for anyone who played since release, it's still DM. The instance you pull your friends' alts through, or get your own alts pulled through. Haven't seen LFG DM (insert wing) since months pre-tbc.

They're both used pretty interchangeably on my server. On my old server it was almost exclusively VC, but then that was pre-bc and I haven't spent any significant amount of time over there since.

I see more 'new' users calling Deadmines "DM" than "VC". A few of us alliance old-schoolers call it VC because Van Cleef was the focus of the instance. I guess if you came on as Horde you might call it differently. I've only had 1 horde alt and don't really use him. I watch horde run VC all the time. When I was on a PvP server we used to like to trounce them when they tried. PvE it's wave, 'good luck' and off they go.

So it's probably a question of when you started playing WoW and what faction you used, maybe server but that may have to do with how old or new the server is. I normally use VC to avoid any confusion. VC'ers know exactly what instance I'm referring to! ^_^

Pets following runners is a bad thing. Its not because pets aggro the mobs. Its because the runner will sometimes continue running further away if it is being engaged. Its that longer run that aggros additional mobs. If the pet is not following the mob it won't run as far. So keep your pet on passive. Manually send him after each mob you're fighting.

Since I hit 60, my pet's always been on passive anyway, but I've never seen that happen. Not with my own pet, nor anyone else's pet. Pulling your pet back from a Runner isn't going to change his behaviour at all, unless your pet somehow manages to get on top of the aggro list and it's a mob that goes to range. Those are so rare it's not even funny. In any instance, if your pet is highest on the threat list, it means your tank is dead, your healer is dead and you bloody suck at dealing damage.

There are other reasons for bringing your pet back, but adds have never been any of them.

We'll have to disagree on this North. I have seen mobs do what I've described numerous times.

My first experience with this was in Deadmines with the pirates shooting guns. They typically stay at range and shoot the party. These mobs will periodically change position and continue shooting. However if a pet is engaging one, it will run even further away, attempting to get to ranged distance on the pet. This will aggro mobs sometimes at considerable distance from the fight.
