Duoing to 70, considering prot.Follow

I've been leveling exclusively with a resto druid, and we finally got to Outland today. Right now I'm using a 2h Splammer build (link here), working my way up to a typical 33/28. But now that we're in Outland, I'm considering respeccing to Prot. I've tried tanking on other toons in the past, but never with a dedicated healer who definitely knew what they were doing. I know that with a tank and a healer, it would be extremely easy to find dps for instances, but I'm more worried about while we're duoing. Here's where the questions come in:

When we're not instancing, will our damage output drop to a painful level?

When we're not instancing, should I be using sword and board or dual wielding?

Finally (and not at all surprisingly) what should my spec look like? I've been considering a Shield Slam/Fury build, or maybe just going all the way to Devastate. I'm not sure how much I'll need Devastate in instances, and I'm not sure how much fury talents would help while duoing.

Thanks for reading, and I eagerly await any and all feedback.

prot on live is really about tanking stuff now. its dps is poor and the only good thing about having a dedicated healer is you can say "LF3M dps then g2g" when you want to instance.

in terms of outdoor, non-elite and non-group quests, you'll be a lot slower as prot than you will as your current build. roughly about 30% slower (give or take) with sword and board if you want a ballpark figure. dual wielding would be a bit better, but still slower than your current build.

its not impossible, but it is slow. on the bright side, you could probably outlast anything short of a 5-man elite quest, and youll be really hard to kill in pvp (but equally powerless to kill anything else).

also, dont do non-instance stuff in your tank gear if youre prot. dual wield in a dps set is your best bet. get a good amoung of hit (about 6% should do you while leveling) and use devastate as your main attack. you pretty much want to spam the hell out of it while in battle or zerker stance while using a nice slow main hand and a fast OH. with enough practice youll get into a good groove and can kill things pretty efficiently, if not quite as fast as a fury or arms spec.

go protection and definitely pick up devastate. put together a good set of fury gear and when you quest, just dual wield and spam devastate. you can do some very decent dps, but you are still gear dependent and it scales with your AP.

by the way, you want slow/slow weapon speed for your fury set - especially if you're prot spec. however, stats > speed in the off hand.

start with something like this. if you are going to tank most of the time, pick up deflection & improved thunderclap, then cruelty. if you will be outside instances more, get cruelty first.

It depends on what your goal is. If your goal is to level to 70 as fast as possible, for God's sake, don't go Prot. You'll go much faster as 2h Fury. You've got a personal healer, so there's no reason why you can't spend 100% of your time in berserker stance. I'd seriously consider going 51 points in Fury and working your way down Arms. Honestly, your build is kind of all over the place. If you want to keep your mix of Fury and Arms I'd go with something more like this. Finish filling out flurry, then 2h spec.

However, if you're planning on running a lot of instances, which I wouldn't even consider until the Outlands, then choosing a hybrid build isn't necessarily a bad idea. It'll help you learn the role you want to play end game, while still giving yourself a decent amount of soloing (duoing) ability. I'd go with something like this at 63.

Just my 2 cents.

I've tanked all the instances to 70 with my fury warr, with a half-dedicated healer and even a few retarded DPSes. You shouldn't worry, any warr can tank non-heroics.
