It seems current Paladin gear is being re-itemized for Wrath. Now, some of you may have seen this a while back. I haven't been paying attention to gear changes at all, but just a few moments ago had the idea to look up how my Shaman's current gear and how its stats were going to change. I read Blizz wants Hunters and Shaman to use the same gear (blah, I liked looking for strength ...) and knew their gear was changing. So I looked up the Justicar Faceguard as well, and low and behold, I found this.

Current stats for this item are:
+43 stamina
+24 intellect
+29 defense rating
+24 dodge rating
+27 damage/healing

In Wrath the intellect and damage/healing are gone and replaced with +35 strength.

I mention this cause a lot of posts here have people saying, "Oh wow, I'm gonna have 700+ spell power come the X-pac!" Well, not necessarily. It depends on what gear you have on. There may be pieces with damage/healing that will still have spell power when Wrath hits, and if you are using those pieces, you may see very high spell power numbers. If you've got gear like this though, your spell power will be, more or less, solely based on Touched by the Light.

Just something to think about before you get too many crazy ides in your head :)

The reason they're nerfed Int off the gear is so they can keep 20% mana return on Judgement. If Ret Paladins have a big mana pool, 20% of it is quite large so they can heal effectively; if they are stuck to (mostly) base mana they have to manage their mana that much more carefully and will probably easily find themselves running out of it.

I personally, no joke, intend to enchant and gem for Int. Retadins will be doing tons of damage, it is mana that is going to win the race in PvP.

hmm, i don't know sin... i spent 3 hours in naxx yesterday and only time i ran out of mana was my first couple of fights..like a ****** i had put my HoJ where i'm used to my JoW being so instead of judging and getting mana back, i was stunning and running out of mana... after a few fights i finally realized my judgement CD was really long and switched back. after that mana wasn't a problem again.. at all. i was topped off and that was with spamming Sacred Shield on the tank to help the healers in addition to my normal dps cycle (judge, CS, DS, exorcism, HW with some consecrates in there for multiple mos). even keeping everthing on CD as much as possible i hovered around 3/4 mana.it was nice. if only the PVP gear was good for tanking the bosses maybe we'd have downed a boss in those 3 hours.... i nearly cried when Anub didn't even go down.... oh well. we decided to run some 5mans to get the tanks some real gear lol.

LOL

Anyway, I brought this up for spell damage, didn't even think of the intellect being gone, but please feel free to discuss both :)

EDIT: I decided to look up the rest of my gear, and I found that the craftable tanking boots, Boots fo the Protector, aren't changing. Damage/healing is being changed to spell power, but other than that, no difference. Which I thought was odd. I've found the Justicar set will change, the badge chest (Chestguard of the Stoic Guardian), the crafted Belt of the Guardian, and even the badge wrists (Bracers of the Ancient Phalanx) which doesn't even have any "Paly" stats on it to begin with. They're adding strength to it, but nerfing the defense rating by 9 and expertise rating by 7.

Aldori Legacy Defender too: gaining strength, losing some defense rating and hit rating.

With these changes, and the fact that Anticipation will be changed to 5% dodge instead of 20 defense skill, I will be going critable as soon as the patch hits (unless they are changing how much defense rating is needed to get 1 point of skill ...). With the gear I have on, I'll lose 15 defense rating and then 20 skill from talents, putting me at 481 defense.

My dreams of having spell power leaking out of my ears are dashed on the rocks of reality. :(

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I liked having to rely on a different stat to Warriors for threat generation. It made me feel like I was a different class of tank. On the other, it kinda sucked because I ended up wearing warrior tanking gear anyway simply because it was what I could get.

The -int is worrying me. I have mana problems already. I was hoping this would be fixed in the xpac. Is there some reason why they don't want us to have +int?

I don't think it's so much that they don't want us to have it as they don't want to make separate gear for it. They are wanting all 3 plate tanks to use the same gear, and putting intellect on that gear is wasted points for 2 of 3 classes.

This does bring up a question though: Death Knights don't use shields, so, are there going to be gear just for them that has no Block Rating/Value? I can see there being 2 or so of each item slot for plate tanking so Death Knights can have armor without useless block stats, but it does kinda go against what Blizz is trying to do with the gear.

EDIT: woops, I sidetracked myself, lol. I was going to mention all the new mana cost reduction we have access too as well as the uber buff to BoSanctuary. I think these changes will more than make up for the fact we'll have little to no intellect on our gear.

Well if you want to get an idea on gear changes. Copy your character to the PTR and see who it changes. I did this with my healadin and was impressed with the talents/armor changes.

Tankadins don't need Int now as they get Spell power from their Stamina with touched by the Light to increase spell power by up to 30% of stamina. with approximately 1000 +stamina from gear +12% from talents (1120 total + stamina) that would be 336 spell power before your gear. Which from looking at tankadin sets listed looks like Shield and weapon will be primary slots for spell power adds.

Except intellect and spell power have nothing to do with each other.

We don't need to gear for spell power for the reason you mentioned.

We don't need intellect on gear because our mana regen has been buffed while mana usage has been reduced (just taking into account talents).
