I hate to ask this question. I really hate to ask this, but I'm going to anyway 'cause it's the only way I'll learn.

When I leveled my hunter, 99% was done solo. Because I was solo, I never learned to use distracting shot. In fact, I didn't even put it on my action bar because there was nothing to distract my target to.

So, how do I use distracting shot. I don't know how to "tell" the mob where to go using DS.

Distracting shot makes the target attack you not make it go somewhere else, its mostly used to pull a mob to trap it or used in conjunction with Misdirect to pull and have the targets go after the tank

Distracting shot basically is a shot that does 0 damage but a marginal amount of threat. All in all it sub par, because you can get a similar amount of threat from doing an arcane shot and you do damage to the mob. But it's a good back-up for those darned paladin tanks and their captain america shield. When Arcane+Auto just isn't enough to get aggro to trap your mob toss in distacting for that added threat push.

I've had a few times where pulling aggro quickly was needed. I've done it like Synn says and it works but don't forget about concussive shot as well. First, if your tank has more aggro than you after the concussive shot, the target will be slowed (of course this doesn't work on bosses but bosses don't get CC'd either... ^_^). Second, it lets you pump 2-3 more shots into the target before they reach you or the tank, letting you get more aggro built up. Distracting shot can be one of those to build up the aggro but it triggers the GCD so distracting is among the last I use if I have time and everything else is on CD. With concussive, crits and a well placed trap, I've iced targets at more than 5k threat. Admittedly, it's not something you WANT to do all that often, but there are times it comes in handy.

I've noticed that concussive shot is very under-utilized by most hunters but I love it. I can drop most targets before they even get to me. I enjoy using it as an opening shot. I only use distracting when I'm desperate for a shot that will up my aggro level and my others are on CD. That is not very often.

At the moment, Distracting Shot does 0 damage, but generates around 900 threat. You use it to pull stuff at your traps, or away from a healer, or even shoot it at a CCed target to make them come at you when it breaks.

But it's being changed. It will no longer create threat, but instead be like a ranged Mocking Blow, forcing the target to attack you for 6 seconds.
