Hi all,

So last night I'm in AB trying to take lumber mill with a group. I pop over the hill, target a rogue, put my pet on it and go into my shot rotation. The rogue is taking damage, and attacking another hunter. I see the rogue flash, ah ok... he's getting healed, i switch targets to the priest that just arrived, and finish her off with help, then return to the rogue to finish him. About this time another rogue does me in, and i'm sitting waiting for rez when I see this comment 'LVL 66 HUNTER PLEASE CONTROL YOUR PET!' So I respond, 'what the problem?' Turns out he tried to frost trap the rogue i switch targets off of, but since i didn't switch my pet (i figured i had help on the priest, and i was switching back to rogue shortly) it broke the trap and he died...

Now honestly I gave up using freeze traps in BG a while ago, unless i was certain i was the only one on the target. They just get broke too many times to be useful all that often. I mean honestly i would have just broken his trap with an arrow, if I was still on it. (Of course if he noticed me switch targets, i understand his frustrations, but he didn't appear to be that aware...) Usually if I can't shake someone and I figure i'm dead, I resort to one of the DoT traps to keep the damage up after i die. However this got me wondering what other hunters do, obviously not everyone has the same strategy.

So how do people use traps in BG? do people use a macro announcing a freeze trap? avoid them mostly? Anyone have a similar problem?

Frost trap and Snake Trap. Any other trap in a BG is a wasted Cooldown.

It's really situational, but usually a snake or frost trap will be better than a freezing trap.

I do not use freeze traps in BG unless I'm 1:1-2 with somebody(ies). I did it more when I was MM/SV spec than I do with BM/MM spec. I do recall pissing off a very well geared warrior once with it. He intercepted me and for some stupid reason he didn't hamstring me, I wingclipped him and ran through him. He trinketed out of the clip but not till I had several shots on him. He ran right into a freeze trap I dropped right in front of him. I bandaged, HM'd, aimed & sent pet. He didn't survive the encounter. I did with more than half health.

I don't knock freeze traps in BG's but they are definitely useless in multiple encounters. AOE flys free in BG's and the odds of your freeze surviving are rare. Heck, I never have Multishot OFF CD in BG's so I know no freeze trap would survive in front of me, I'd tell the other hunter to use the right trap for the right occasion.

I also tend to have snake or explosive in play. Explosive is a bit more useful than snake, IMO, because it can't be AOE'd away. If you can dump that in an area that the enemy is concentrated in, and can't leave, you get several extra kills of all the folks near death.

Hi,
I kind of get used to use snake trap when defending flag in WSG. It works quite nicely as horde are most of the time trying jump from ballcony to the flag spot and so they jump on trap. Even mage will then get one or two bites and are slowed. Even if they blink (which is what they usually do) they are still slowed and now your pets starts to be red and hits them down very nicely.

Frost trap I tend to use when supporting flag carrier and tracking shows that there are some hordes right behind us. For that purpose works as well putting pet on aggressive and let her (Kocicka) to stay. She will then attack first horde who is slowed by trap and gots couple of bites. At that time I'm already far away and I can call my pet back.

Never been with the flag runner in WSG I presume? Freezing Trap can be great there. Especially so as SV. Dropping 2 in close proximity at the tunnel can be the difference between a cap and a loss.

Also when guarding a node in AB/EotS, I nearly always have a Freezing Trap on my heels. Can be a nasty surprise for Rogues.

It is situational admittedly, where Frost/Snake is almost always a good thing to lay down, but I wouldnt describe Freezing as useless in BGs.

I always thought that pets stopped attacking their target when they were freeze trapped?
Or is it only your own traps?

Sounds like the rogue just used a trinket.

You are correct (pet stops attacking traped target) expect in BG its always a bit fuzzy situation and thus you might have trouble to target one toon to step into the trap. That would mean any other toon is under DOTing and steps to trap its waste of CD then...

A trick I use in BG's with defensible nodes (AB, AV, etc.) is to put the trap INSIDE the node you are defending. A quirk of the game lets you install the trap into the viewable 'node' at the base of the post. If you are directly up against the base, facing it, and set the trap it sets it into the base. When someone comes to try and sneak the node (while you are a bit of a distance away from it to guard it- hopefully hidden somehow) they freeze instantly, giving you time to send pet and set up with an aimed shot on them, then pour out every ounce of fire you have against them. Usually, a surprised rogue doesn't survive it if you do enough burst damage. If not, then you should have enough of a start to finish the job.

Like I said eariler, there are ways to utilize freeze traps in BG's, they are just very poor at CC in mass combat. Too much AOE going around.

You should have told the other hunter who was trapping to go pound sand. Like he's not going to die another 20 times in the BG anyways..

I also mainly use snake traps or freezing traps near the flags. Pisses off the opposition when they can't run, and the added casting time + poison from the snakes makes it pretty worthwhile.

However there are some seasoned players who will AoE as soon as they see the snakes making it a wasted attempt.
