I am a warlock and i got out damaged by a holy / disc priest in maggies. Granted i have to fear / banish and i was one of the clickers and he wasn't but he showed me his fraps video of the fight and all he did was spam smite, gave himself power infusion even faster spam. Then when he crit his next cast was instant. I mean he gets 10% crit from talents (more than any other class i believe) and he gets 4% spell hit meaning cap for him is 12%. He had all the badge gear and rest T4 but did 1012 DPS, i mean wow anyone else tried this Disc / Holy hybrid dps spec? is this common place or is he a revolutionary?

Please don't reply with "ZOMG in maggies I did 8 million DPS with no gear" type responses

Well while over 1k dps as a smiter is impressive its not something unheard of. Mags is a single target type raid. so you must factor that into it.

mostly its not ran because of the reason you stated. you just spam one damn skill and thats about it. also your not giving anything other than dps to your group, and honestly 1k dps should be considered "low end" at mags level.

So ya most wont run smite seriously, but it is fun to play and does good damage. but it tends to get boring quick and really has no utility/group benifit.

however if i saw the dude.. i would give him props for it.

DPS with smite can be done, but it has the big problem of running out of mana fast...

I have a 23/38/0 priest, and while i do the dailies i never have to drink. The spirit regen changed a lot of mana issues, though.

The three biggest problems with Smitespec:
- Longevity. They deserve the title "oomkin" infinitely more than doomkin do. Their mana requirements are just too high once you get to the point where you might be constantly DPS'ing a boss, without any breaks, for 8-12 minutes straight.
- Scaling. Other classes scale better with gear; for example, mages and warlocks get more DPS from every point of crit, damage, and haste, compared to a smiter priest.
- Group synergy. There is none. Smiter priests offer very little, if anything, to a raid that a 23/38 healing priest can't (Power Infusion can be nice to give to a Fire mage for extra Molten Fury awesomeness, but other than that is fairly limited). On the other hand, in order to be effective, a smiter priest needs a shadow priest at the very least, and a moonkin and ret pally help immensely.
