My first real group with my shammyFollow

Last night, while on my main doing dailies, one of my guildies asked me to DPS SM.

I'd never really played my Shammy in a group, so I was just a tad nervous. Also, my Shaman is lvl 34, and my guildie is a level 34 mage. The group summoned me, and I see that we are made up of a 40 pally, 32 priest, 33 resto druid and the two of us.

Between the priest and the druid, we had plenty of healing, thank goodness. For actual melee though, there was only the paladin, mage's minion and me. A little croud control would have been nice, but the paladin did an exellent job with the puls and managing threat.

That's the background, now for the fun stuff and request for recomendations for future endeavors.

I kept windfury on my weapon. I also kept a WF totem down for the paladin. In addition, I kept a mana stream totem down to help with the mana regen for the casters. Wasn't really sure what earth totem to put down, so I kind of rotated between stoneskin and earthbind (mostly by whatever button I pushed, not by any calculated reasoning). Fire totem was basically the same way, I rotated between the offensive totems.

The typical battle was something like this: The paladin would make the pull. I would get around behind the mobs and start beating on them. Hit them with a fire shock, then earth or frost whenever focussed proc'ed.

We did wipe one time. I reincarnated (too cool) then rezzed the priest. The first time I have ever resurrected anyone, and it was great.

I know how much I enjoyed this, but is there something I should have done different, overall?

Thanks.

I was going to say you should use Wrath of Air totem for the pally tank, but that's not available until lvl 64. I would have also used strength of Earth totem as that would help the tank's melee threat build.

You should stay away from frost shock as it causes a high amount of threat...it's only really good to try to get a mob of your healer.

It's good you're having fun now, because in a few levels you get Storm Strike and dual-wield and your damage output will go through the roof. Just remember to look for the slowest one-handers you can find (2.6s or greater) and enjoy!

Edit:
Current Tank Totems

Warrior - Windfury
Pally - Wrath of Air
Druid - Grace of Air

Wrath becomes available at lvl 64
Grace becomes available at lvl 42

This rule will change with the expansion (grace of air is combining with strength of earth, windfury is becoming a melee haste buff, and wrath of air is becoming spell haste)

Expansion Tank Totems (may change)
Warrior/Druid/Pally/DeathKnight - Windfury
Pally/DeathKnight - Wrath of Air (not really sure on this one...DKs and Pallys might not have any spells that have casting times for tanking)

I'm a tad confused... the only minion a mage can have is a Water Elemental, and that's not around until later levels. So I'm assuming your friend is a Lock and not a Mage.

Anywho, Ailitardif gave great advice. Once you get toward 40, you'll be able to dual wield and get stormstrike. It's quite fun. I don't think there's really much I can add to his reply to you, OP, but glad that you had fun in there.

Good luck on your shammy if you continue to play him/her!

Thanks for the advice. The next one will be even more fun.

I am going to continue to play this toon. He's too much fun to put away.

You're also right about my guildie, he's a 'Lock.

My shammy is about to hit 56, and in my BRD groups, I usually throw down Strength of Earth, Grace of Air and Mana totem (Or if there's a resto shammy in the group like there was last night, I throw down healing totem instead).

You should generally go for Strength of earth as it will increase your damage output by a fair amount, and your tank should be able to hold aggro.
