This is a good question. With Wrath just around the corner it would be best imo to choose based on what will be available in the expansion content, but so far the only items I have seen confirmed that will be available to a specific discipline of smithing have been 2 Ret pieces which require armorsmithing. There's been a rumor going around also that armorsmiths will be able to add meta sockets to some pieces of armor, but I can't confirm this.
Hopefully someone else will have more info on what armor/weaponsmiths will be able to do in the new content.

At this moment in time Armorsmithing is incapable of building proper tanking pieces. The closest you can get in BC is the Felsteel set, which any blacksmith can make. In the same way, none of the Weaponsmithing paths allow you to make a proper spell damage weapon. The blacksmithing specialisations as a whole seems to be aimed towards DPS plate and weapons. The pieces you can craft are very good, but also very expensive, and it's arguable if they're worth the time and money one puts into leveling blacksmithing.
The ability to put sockets in armour and possibly weapons has been mentioned before. It looks credible, and if it's true I'll be creaming my pants, srsly. An extra slot for a blue gem on main armour pieces is a major advantage for tanks.
What blacksmithing needs is a) more recipes b) cheaper materials and c) the ability to craft useful shields. An Armorsmith-only tanking shield would be a very, very good reason to level blacksmithing.

Here is the source I've been using for my WotLK info (mostly), this link in particular going to the blacksmith portion of the site. ze, you mentioned shields, and blacksmiths will be able to make some shields now :D Just wanted to show ya that ;)
As far as BoP armorsmith only ones, I'm in agreement that that would be huge! I would love to see a 3 tiered epic tanking shield much like the current weaponsmith items and armorsmith DPS chests.
Anyway, as per my previous post: Chestplate of Conquest and Legplates of Conquest under the "new armor recipes" section are the items I was referring to earlier if you are interested in taking a look. Again, they're itemized for DPS, but if you're interested at all in respecs to Ret, might be ok for ya.
