Its possible its different on the beta, and its even possible that it does have good uses.

You're just wrong about me not having tried it.

I hope it does have its uses, and I hope it turns out better than it is on the PTR right now, I was excited to mess around with it.

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and had a build question. Just got to level 60 on my rogue, moving towards the 20/41 Combat build. 3.0 and all the changes I have read about on this forum make things quite different now.

What would you recommend for leveling towards 70 with the new talents? Just continue with Combat Swords, building towards 5/51/5, or is Mutilate a better way to level up to 70 now?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Until 3.0 hits in a couple of weeks (Oct. 13? iirc) Combat still allows for the least amount of down-time and thus more xp/hour than other builds. But only marginally. I solo as Shadow Step all the time and dailies don't take much more time than when I do them as Combat. I'd stick to Combat for leveling, just noting that now that quests > grinding for xp/hour, the difference is smaller.

I would not suggest Mutilate builds until after the patch, at which point I'm preferring them over Combat. As of Beta build 9014, Mutilate is still showing me better dps than combat for grinding quest mobs at 70 with equal down-time. This may change, nothing is set in stone.

Also important to note: Leveling builds are not the same as level-cap builds. Certain talents are more vital for quest-grinding than for end game raiding or PvP. Don't try to "work toward" an end game build while leveling, you will probably pass by a useful talent or two.

Welcome to Outland!

*edit for clarification

Thanks for the help Therion. I will try to move through the next 10 levels as quickly as possible before the patch hits.

What talents do you feel are vital to leveling? If you don't mind answering.

Why imp S&D? Why Enveloping Shadows over Initiative? And why no Relentless?

Looks most like a subtlety raid build or such to me, but I can't get around the logics of it.

Ive been without internet at my house for a month (just moved and I hate the cable company now) so ive been out of the loop from reading the forums a bit.

I see that shadow dance has changed at some point during my hiatus to be an effective talent. My question is as follow:

Is having a dagger in a sub build, not for primary usage but to pull out only when you are shadow dancing, an effective tactic so you can utilize those ambushes for 8 seconds? I ask this, hoping not to get flamed, because I am assuming sap wont be very effective since your opponent will be in combat and CS/garrote have their DR's.

Any feedback is appreciated and sorry if its been touched on before. I couldnt find it!

...What?

If you're going to level as daggers, level as mutilate.

If you're going to level as combat daggers, at least get Puncturing Wounds.

We've been through this discussion thousands of times. Positional attacks are not viable for efficient leveling.

Agreed that Pos attacks can be rough for leveling. My Shadow dance/Ambush question was purely for PvP consideration. If there's a thread on that just point me in the right direction! Thanks.

finally got around to playin around on a beta rogue, and i gotta say

from a aspect of fun, im in love with my @#%^-ret HFB build <33

i will definately be going full-on HFB for casual rogue play, as i dont seriously arena anymore.... and its just a truckload of flashy numbers

still adjusting to muti though, not managing my combo points well, but i will definately be leveling as muti/HFB

since the build is pretty well equipped at level 70

pvp build? not really, has big control issues staying in melee range (i definately see muti/prep being a lot better for that then HFB)... but it adds a mechanic that regardless of how good the skill actually is, keeping up HFB and having tons of combo points is just killer

when i finalize my fun version of the build, ill let you guys know

EDIT: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=fhecoxMoiroIuAo0xVZxb might be the way to go with pve in mind... not sure

i was thinking how combat daggers/backstab could work.
i got bored and tried it w/my free respec on the ptr today.

its kinda nice, of course no way to test at 80, no way to test w/gear scaling, and no way to compare.
i forgot what it was like having burstable damage on rogue though, ive been shs and combat for too long.
http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?rogue=20520520502050102231005012500050230050000000000000000004020000000000000000000000000

Theres no math behind it other than take the stuff that you'd normally boost backstab with. so its not perfect yet.
the only concern i have, is i might be crit capped on most things because i'm running around 30% crit normally, + the 30 from puncturing wounds.

just for fun build though.

That build is terrible. Mutilate will crush the **** out of that build at 80.

yea i know, thats why i said just for fun on the PTR lol.
theo, is combat daggers even viable anymore? for killing sunwell mobs it was decent.
what builds are really premier builds. mutilate and combat swords are obviously still good, and i know combat shiv builds have been rater destructive with poison scaling.

Therion's fault - he started this thread (after the sticky was updated)

BAD Therion!
