Argh, in preparation for the patch and eventually lich, mostly the patch, I added some newer ret gear, little pvp, some rep gear to upgrade a little in anticipation...also decided to respec ret (again)on live (got outfitter so I swap out quickly when I need to tank, which has been minimal as my mage has been my main and used more often than anything)...

Now, I know im not decked out in full purps, but, yich, I say to you, yich yich yich, and I think I am PTR spoiled now, as all I want to do is run around the ptr and play ret LOL. Did play a little with the tank build on PTR when the talents were just reset, and I think IT does more damage than my live ret! Also, if anyone hasnt mentioned, avengers shield is instant cast! and that hammer of righteous, swipe like talent, is pretty damn sweet if I do say so, now its been modified to say UP TO 3 targets.

But still, yich on live, and mmmmm mmmm ptr :D Cant get enough :( Gonna have to face it im addicted to PTR lol.

Well in my quest to see an instance I can't do, I've now cleared Underbog and Slave Pens and went on to Mana Tombs. Cleared up to the second boss without a hitch, but he gives me a hard run for my money. It wouldn't be so bad, but he has that move that stones you and takes out half your life over 5 seconds (while he's allowed to be hitting you as well). I can kinda manage it though, I died a few times trying him, but I got him down to about 10k once (he has about 94k health). I'll bring some health potions next time, and that might be enough to beat him.

Cap? are you soloin them instances?
#55 Sep 19 2008 at 9:12 AM Rating: Good

CAP, you mentioned you tried ret, but I would have to assume that you are prot spec for the instances. Is that correct. I would be interested in seeing what spec you are using and your rotation.

No I'm doing the instances as Ret.

Edit: I'm doing a build that's this. Although it's not really optimized for soloing instances. I might find 5 points (maybe out of STR... probably lose about 150 AP doing this) and throw them into Holy for uninterruptable heals, also would probably take the 2 points out in PoJ and put them in Swift Retribution. For when I really need a heal and can't wait for a crit (and I can't stun bosses).

As far as what I'm doing. SoL/JoL combo. FFighting groups of mobs is easy, if there are 3 or four, every Divine Storm heals me almost to full, with a instant FoL right after if need be. If it's only one, I have no problem killing them. As for bosses, the tougher ones I FoL every single time I see Art of War proc. This keeps me topped off long enough and I can outlast them. Only bosses that have given me problems so far is the Hydra in Underbog with his 2k spits that he likes to spam, and the rock boss in Mana Tombs, which I'm getting closer each time to doing.

Second Edit: Thinking about it more, if I wanted to make a build for soloing instance, I probably wouldn't grab SoC either and probably throw that in Vindication. True it doesn't work on raid bosses/mobs, but I'm not doing that.

Also, I'm going to try soloing Onyxia next time I get a chance. I'm pretty sure I can pull it off as Ret.

Thats awesome cap, must be some crazy size smile on your face to be able to pull that off. DAMN, reminds me of the good ol` times, back the in the day when you could do that in the old world instances. Just had to be careful.
#59 Sep 19 2008 at 4:26 PM Rating: Good
Haha yeah it's awesome. I didn't even need to be that careful, I had several bad pulls and was able to fight them off. Now that I'm in Mana Tombs I need to be a little more careful and I'm using Repentance as CC. Just killed the 2nd boss in there (no health pots but I had to use LoH), but the severs went down so I gotta do it again ><.

You're taking Improved Blessing of Might instead of Crusade? This is surely a sign of the Creeping Madness, Jack. Improved Ret Aura is a bit suspicious too with Divine Purpose untouched.

For pure PvE I'd go with this, adding more damage but ditching a couple of support talents. To be honest with the sheer weight of mana returns you can get right now I'd be tempted to swap Benediction for Parry, mana really doesnt seem to be a concern these days when you can just take a rotation 'off' and recharge your mana with Judgements.

Incidentally I hope you're having fun Jack, nobody on the EU PTR can replicate it due to some truly spirit-crushing lag.

you guys have to go to Youtube and check out some of them videos, ones with 17k 16k judgements... I think I have creamed my pants... just O.M.G. Its all thanks to that art of war I think, but still. freaking awesome.

EDIT 2

Ah, thought you had said you gave ret a try, assumed it meant you were doing it all as ret.

Sucks, as I have updated my ret gear the past couple days in anticipation, ie merciless gloves, furious goggles, some enchants, couple more blues max dps suggested, and really wish I could recopy my toon over (*sigh). Armory is down, so cant see yours, but mine was mostly tank gear with a couple of greens from AH, so not sure how optimal it would be soloing.

The irony, is I assumed or not assumed, more envisioned, you doing them on heroic lol, so used to only doing heroic, forgot about regular.

One thing I am wondering, is how "OP" ret will be at 80. Someone had told me, a pretty knowledgeable fella, and also think I recall reading about it somewhere, that it tails off around 74-75. Which is fine, but I am hoping we still stay competitive with other hybrids, and not too far off from pure classes, whether it be dps, prot or holy.

The new DRUIDS. If we can do what they can do in BC, ill be quite pleased.

This was something I touched on in my initial post of thoughts about talents.

I like my 160 damage Ret Aura, and I already have a good amount of spell avoidance for being a BE. The BoF thing is really not an issue since I can't cast it WHILE I'm stunned.

I guess Crusade probably would have been better than Imp. BoM. I was more excited about trying it out then really thinking it through completely for the talents.

Lol @ soloing heroics... yeah I can't heal through 8k damage hits (minimum on some mobs)... no matter how powered I am.

Edit: There are mana burning mobs in Mana Tombs that can make me go OOm, being able to cast the judgement just a little quicker saved my *** a couple times.

Also, assuming that we won't have Int on our gear @ 80, Judgement will only refresh the mana from DS + CS, and won't be as much of a mana return as it is now. 10% off of every spell we are pretty much doing, is a nice way to get a little more ahead on that front.

But your CAP, your the one I idolized when I first found this place and learned all my pally goodness. I must have you on a higher pedestal then :P

Also in my post above the second ret should have read - protection.

Uhh.....

This: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Burning+Steppes&n=Rosencrantz

is my current gear.

Am i to understand that when the content patch hits and i can spec for Divine Storm, instant cast FoLs and Judgements of the Wise i'll be a one-man army as far as most outland instances are concerned? Cause that's pretty damn exciting! Or is the Cap'n at lv 74 or something on the PTR in northrend gear?
#66 Sep 20 2008 at 6:28 AM Rating: Good
YOu can't get past level 70 in the PTR. If you click my armory link, what you see on there is EXACTLY what I am using (don't even have any inscription glyphs). Your gear is better than mine, so you should have an easier time doing it.

What's awesome is our crit rate affects our damage (obviously) AND our survivability with more crits = more instant FoLs.

This strange synergy between healing and damage seems to be the flavour of the month. Warhammer obviously has a lot of it going on with their healing classes. And the 4th edition of D&D introduced all these offensive abilities for healers that healed party members.

All the videos of beta i've seen make the game look so much fresher, even organic. Warriors and demonic warlocks leaping across the battlefield, Deathknights yanking opponents through the air, shamans generally smacking people off cliffs and blowing everything up....

Also: Siege weapons! There's a lot about the expansion that's pretty exciting.

Well I soloed ramps and furnace last night, just to see. Cap, btw, towards the middle of BF I decided to shoot for using some SoC in there, and WOW, they went down MUCH faster, and with instant FoLs I just healed up that way, and mixed in rotations of that and SoL/JoL some mixtures of JoW and some JoJ for some runners. Cause it was getting too easy.

You want to see crap gear, yours is actually pretty freaking good. Im a tank in BC as Ive stated and my pally got shelved as my main for my mage, so I hardly took the time and only bought up some AH blues and greens for the PTR.

Heres MY armory link when you look at this link, the helm and gloves ARE NOT ON THE PTR, I got them last night, gearing up for the patch - the helm as a green of the beast and the gloves I think were some blue gloves I had picked up in a dugeon - skullsplitter I think:

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Eitrigg&n=Jakexy

EDIT - actually looking at my armory, the shoulders, chest AND legs are not on the PTR either, think shoulderguards of the bold, legs of the resolute defender, and the vindicators chest (quest reward from Nagrand quest) are on the PTR

NOW THATS crap gear lol mixed in with tanking items lol.

and I was able to do them a little too easily lol even with the mini nerf to replenish (not a nerf really, it was just more of a fix I think)

God I had so much fun, I didnt want to stop, want to see how far I can go :D Yes they are 60-63 mobs, but manhandling packs of fours at times, was just fun.

EDIT2 - one thing I do really like, is that crit is rolled into both stats healing AND melee. So with the AP/SP conversion and that my crit is up there on my spell - the damage is larger AND the heals crit alot more.

Edited, Sep 20th 2008 3:09pm by spicyoctopusroll

EDIT 3 - CAP, didnt think about it before, when you mentioned DS on packs healing you back up, myMY GOD, its so refreshing and liberating to grab up a pack of mobs, DS and see all those green numbers fly through the air like magic pixie dust
