Rolling a mageFollow

Would you say playing a mage is indirect combat? And also what are the strong points of a mage compared to the other classes? What are reasons to play a mage? And some weaknesses.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this, but a fireball to the face is about as direct as you can get.

Actually, I think a sword/fist to the face by a warrior is as direct as you can be.... physically speaking. I would use the word "RANGED", OP.

Mages are ranged fighters , so yes indirect combat is correct.

Reasons to play a Mage are the crazy amounts of damage you can do , read the Mage threads to see just how much that is , for example my level 38 crits almost every other shot now for around 700 damage , my hunter same level is around half that and crits far less.

Reason two i would say is escaping damage , Freeze mob blink and you continue attacks , run out of mana and its freeze / blink and at the right level you can refresh all your mana before the mob/mobs break free .

Weaknesses are wearing cloth so direct combat is not a good idea , running out of mana if you are not careful is also not such a good idea , but saying that if you play a Mage right then you should never run out.

Mages as a class have only two weaknesses as far as i can see , one is no healing ability and the other is having to be careful of your mana , other than those two if you play with care they are great fun and as i am a Hunter nut to me they are as easy to play as my hunters are.

Not sure on PvP as i am not interested in it , but i think they can take on most classes and do ok.

I am sure a few others that are better able to explain high level Mages will give better answers than i can.

Strong points: Fun to play. Insane fun. You have to use your wits to stay alive because most monsters can kill you in a couple of hits. But rarely will a mob ever get close enough to land those blows. You have many tools to keep enemies at bay and control a fight. You do insane damage while your enemy struggles to reach you.

Other ranged classes do a lot of damage too, but I have more fun with a mage. Shamans and boomkins only have a couple of spells and such heavy armor that they don't have to control mobs as much, warlocks and hunters survive because their pets distract the opponent. A mage lives and dies largely on skill alone. (Not to say these others classes don't require skill to play, just that the margin for error is larger for them.) And a mage has a mind-boggling array of killing, while the hunter, shaman and boomkin only have a few.

So play a mage if you like to stand back and burn enemies down and keep them at bay, frozen, turned into sheep, stunned, etc. But if playing with a thin margin for error doesn't appeal to you, roll a pally or druid. A well-played mage almost never dies but a poorly-played mage dies a ton.

Also, the above argument only applies to PvE. PvP is a different story. Come on back sometime if you want the whole, sad tale....

Let me say this. I LOVE my mage. He does tons of damage and survives a lot of fights.

I have a 70 Mage and he is very easy to play. The hardest part is when I am doing instances and I have to worry about my damn sheep. And honestly that isn't even that hard.

Mage AoE grinding after about 24 gets to be really fun if you can figure out how to do it. But I will say that you will take a lot of mana breaks on your way to 70 :)
