2 bars to ding to 70, the felsteel armor.. do I need to have blacksmithing as a profession to wear the armor?
only need smithing for the set bonus, which is not that exciting for tanks anyway...

Since I got into the felsteel set myself having all the set without having the blacksmithing profession i could say that its not indeed the best items you could find for a tank warrior but its worth it, if you dont have that much cash/reputation/blacksmithing-max on you to buy ,create epic items or buy from vendors having an Exalted/revered status.
I dont remember the exact prices but I think that the leggins were more difficult to find and the most expensive.
The good thing about this set is that you will prepare your warrior adequally but not Super for the Heroics and Karazan.
You ll be able to play all normal instances with in icluding Mgt.
I honestly so far havent found anything better for a tank that reaches 70 from all vendors having status :Revered for the spesific slots :Helm , Leggins, gloves.
I suppose that Tempest keep instance is something is out of the picture for you , unless you have around 970g to fly there.
The set is made for a protection warrior since it has 35+33+25=93 about 93*2, ... =186 plus defence rating and many (7) slots to but gems.
Keep in mind that since your into the tank bussines its not worth putting anything else to the slots than blue gems with a descent but not exellent +12 stamina wich cost around 22 g each.
That way you ll receive a nice 2*27+25+7*12=63 stamina or 630 health from felsteel only - not too bad but certenly not super.
Not to forget that you could buy with 100g a nice +30 enchantment for stamina for you leggins from AH.
If you also do the solo-quests/Group-quests/Instances for items with +defense rating and stamina-slots you will easily (?)reach the 490 defense and an descent approximate 12500 stamina to start the next level of tanking...
I m not a gourou in tanking but i wonder myself wher i could find bettewr head/leggins/gloves pre-heroic , pre karazan.....

There is a list in the forum (top 3 posts) about good tanking items but the 3 felsteels are already in it.

Should help You a bit. I used my felsteel until t4 gloves dropped, no real upgarde from non heroic. You can get COT rev leggings, they're slightly better. As for helm try to get crafted helm of stalwart defender. Mats are bit pricy but it's practically the same as Opera drop in Karazhan and tbh the only advantage t4 has over it is set bonus and meta socket. Should it should hold You until You are deep into kara.
