Gear for leveling, grinding & dailies?Follow

#1 Sep 12 2008 at 12:01 AM Rating: Good
Hi all,

My Pally is level 66 at the moment and I am still getting used to gearing my pally - so many stats to watch compared to all my other 70's! He has been prot since level 40 and going ok, but it is time to be making some real gear decisions now as I approach the later level quests (netherstorm & SMW) - once you pick a reward, you can't go back!

Am I right to be stacking SpellDamage > Stam > Int for solo play (all plate gear of course)?

Also, I know most people just have their spell weapon & enchant for raiding then have the avoidance gear, but for trash pulls, do you switch some pieces out for more spelldamage/threat?

OH, you're so close to 70! Gratz!

I don't recall stacking spell damage being all that helpful for soloing. It is a bit, but it's not a huge deal while leveling with the way most of your tanking spells use coefficients with spell damage. I often did my solo grinding with my ret set for casters and spread-out mobs (even while spec'd for prot) which stacks AP with some crit instead of spell damage and that seemed to work pretty well in my prot set as well. I didn't bother with Int at all. Blessing of Wisdom and Reckoning did me good enough when I needed it. Still had to drink, but even another 50 Int isn't going to save you from that. ;)

Basically, don't stess gearing too much until later. Right now your job is getting to 70 and reading up on what makes a tankadin rule.

For instances: If you're coming close (or exceeding) 200 spell damage, you should be just fine with gear-appropriate groups in 5-toon instances. This is pretty easy to achieve with a good one-hand and the enchant. Some tankadins do indeed have spell damage gear sets... hell I still occasionally switch out for an additional spell damage set for some trash pulls where its heavy aoe (Dragonhawks in ZA or dinner guests in KZ anyone?). But they aren't absolutely necessary. As you get into raiding, you'll have to scale up spell damage a bit of course. But that's still a ways off and another discussion entirely.

Good luck

As Therion says, don't stress too much. The stickies have some good lists with gear to plan/watch for, and I can only think of one quest that has a truly painful choice (Dabiri's Enigma vs. Starcaller's Plated Legguards). There's no "must-have" levelling gear, and, frankly, you can fill out your set with green "of the Champion" gear from the AH (and/or rep reward gear, of course) and you won't miss a beat when you move up to the L70 instances. I don't think it'll make as much difference for you as prot as it does for me with a holy/shockadin spec. Most of your damage-dealing spells have such small coefficients that incremental +spelldamage won't have much of an effect. On the other hand, it's just bag space.

I don't micromanage that much, and I don't think it'll make much of a difference in level-appropriate content. When you overgear the content, and especially when your DPS overgears it, you'll need that spelldamage gear handy, both to increase your throw-weight and to lower your avoidance so that you can get hit occasionally (and thus healed, giving you some mana back).

Yeah - i am not concerned with my instance/raid tanking gear. I have lists printed out from those forums you have mentioned already :) The [wowitem=32660]Crystalforged Sword[/wowitem] and [wowitem=31200]Shield of the Wayward Footman[/wowitem] have been sitting in my bank since I was about level 30 :)

I'm looking for the stats I need to do things like the SSO dailys as quick as possible. Having 5 70's plus my Pally & Rogue in Outlands approaching 70, being able to get the dailies & stuff done quicker makes things a lot more fun as I can get on to doing instances etc.

I found stacking spell dam quite useful for solo questing/grinding. Couple of elemental shammy pieces with other plate spell dam quest gear, I was in the 400 range by lvl 69. I prefer a shorter fight by blowing 7-8k mana than a long drawn out one where either way you're drinking afterward. Still have an aoe grinding set, but more and more of it is badge/tier pieces any more(700 spell dam with wizard oil). The other stat you should be concerned with is block value, as the higher that is the more mobs you can take at once. Unfortunately you won't find much on any gear until starting to gear for heroics at 70.

And yes for aoe trash pulls like hyjal waves, i swap in about 150 more spell dam(600 fully buffed last time we raided hyjal) so the locks and mages can go nuts. The trick is to swap back to avoidance gear for any waves with 4 or more abominations as all that spell dam gear can be a bit squishy.

Yeah, those aboms hit hard. All our other tanks/off-tanks in Hyjal make sure to pull one of them off the Pally (while still leaving them in the AoE). Very tough to recover from the Pally going down during those trash pulls!

Oh - and thanks for all the answers guys. Much appreciated.
