Frostbite and icelanceFollow

Will frostbite work on icelance or does it have to be a spell that slows/roots/etc the target?

Frostbite

Gives your Chill effects a 5/10/15% chance to freeze the target for 5 sec.

Since Ice Lance doesn't chill, the wording would lead me to believe that it won't proc Frostbite.

Thought as much, but thought I'd double check with expert frost mages.

Thanks for input!

I do not believe that it works. Although I think that if there was a glpyh that would add a chill effect... /drool.

Ice Lance does proc Frostbite, at least it used to. No Chill affect, but definitely Frostbite. Hopefully you are referring to PVP. I don't see the mana/time efficiency in casting Ice Lance on a target that is not frozen. It does however work great on retreating targets.

i've been frost a long time... and BC has been out a long time... i've never seen frost lance proc frostbite. ever. maybe you're confused with winter's chill? because frost lance WILL apply winter's chill, though it has no chill effect (snare) and won't proc frostbite.

spells that proc frostbite:

ice armor
frost armor
blizzard (with improved blizzard talents)
cone of cold
frostbolt

it's possible that frost nova can proc frostbite, but the nova effect overwrites it. who would know. i've never seen mention of such a thing in my combat logs -- so i would say it's unlikely that frost nova procs frostbite. it would be redundant anyway, so who cares either.

I'm pretty sure this is correct. Though I'm not 100%.

Speaking of which, are Frostbite and Frost Nova on the same DR?

I mean, as in

*You cast Frost Nova*
*Target is afflicted by Frost Nova (Diminishing Returns 2/3, 2 second duration)*
*Target is afflicted by Frostbite (No diminishing returns, 3 second duration)*
*Frost Nova fades from Target
... 3 sec later...
*Frostbite fades from Target*

no. impact and frostbite do not incur diminishing returns because they are random effects.

similar effects which are not governed by diminishing returns would be things like the mace stun from rogues and warriors who take those talents (a major reason maces are popular among combat rogues), and blackout the shadow priest talent.

hm. i take it back. i seem to remember that the random proc effects did have a DR rule once upon a time... but i really could swear that was removed in some patch a while ago... it's just now that i think of it, i don't pvp nearly enough to have recent memory of any specific frostbite procs that broke unnaturally...

As a plus point, frost nova does count as freezing for the ice lance to proc its triple damage. :-D
