Ok I am almost 100% sure this will not work and is probably retarded to even think about, but that has never stopped me before.

If you rocked a mage with:

1) The 30% Mana Regen talent while casting.
2) No bonus Int gear.
3) A very Low Mana pool.
4) Deep arcane spec.
5) High high Spirit.

Is there ever a time where you could make it such that your mana regen would be so large that Arcane Barrage would essentially be free?

I mean if you had 100 Mana (over-exaggeration)and you cast Arcane Barrage, it would cost 18 Mana. If your spirit was high enough that you regained 50 Mana every 5, could you theoretically never run OOM?

I realize that you will have a substantial Mana pool from base Int anyway, hence why this is probably impossible. I was just wondering if you could come close to this build?

Your mana will never be that low. Base mana, which is what costs are based on, has nothing to do with your int. Not having Int is just gimping yourself, especially in an arcane spec.

Poldaran is wise. She's not quite Ivanova (shout out to B5 fans), but she's in that league.

I can think of no reason I'd equip my arc/fire mage in non-+int gear.

What they said. Your gear isn't part of your base mana. For example, if a spell that costs 3% of your base mana costs 100 mana for you while you're at 450 intellect, the spell will still cost 100 mana if you gear up to 600 intellect.

I'm not sure if it's possible to attain such high numbers of spirit, but it sounds fun to try anyway. If you stack +spirit and only +spirit, see where you end up?

Theorycrafting on this one, anyone?

Like I had said I didn't think it would work. The important thing is that I had no idea that % base mana cost was based off of the Mana you had before gear and buffs were taken into account. Now that I understand that, my crazy idea is just that.

The person behind the computer is a guy. The character is a girl. As a bit of an RPer, I respond to both.

I love your posts Mentalfrog.

I don't know why but I really want to try to get the most Mana regen I can on mage and just run around like an epileptic battery of death.

Then I realize that I am not that dedicated.

the effect of spirit on your mana regen now scales with intellect. by having less int, your spirit has less of an effect as well. this is why wotlk will introduce a spirit talent in the arcane tree. and deep arcane mages would be wise to take it as well as a modest amount of spirit on their gear.

spirit is still relevant to casters, even if circumstantially.
