How can I not die so much?Follow

#1 Sep 09 2008 at 8:21 AM Rating: Good
Okay I am having some problems and was wondering if anyone could help me out. First off ive noticed that with the paladin atleast, only class ive played, that almost all the talents I have for protection are to mitigate melee damage, same with almost all the tanking gear I look at online. Question is how would I go about mitigating some of this spell damage I die to so very easily when I solo. Some people have told me to buy potions, if that is the case could anyone point me toward what kind of potion I should buy? I try to switch my aura to what ever spell i see being cast on the target im fighting but most of the time its either not quick enuff or just ends up hitting me. Most of my armor is green and not that good, hopeing to upgrade to some blues. My Defense rateing is 487 I have 9100 health and 4400ish mana, and ZERO to any resists unbuffed, brand new to the 70 club just this week so if anyone could help me out with any advice tips etc I would be very happy. Thanks.

The key is to try to plan ahead and know what you are about to fight. Most prots have 0 resistance in their normal gear, and eventually build up different sets of resist gear, but being new to 70, 0 resist is par for the course.

If you are familliar with an area where you will be fighting, know what casters are around and what sort of damage they do, and use the proper resist aura before you pull anything. Also, don't pull huge gobs of casters at one time... this usually leads to a face-plant.

One other good trick is to treat wherever you are like a dungeon and use terrain, walls, corners, etc. to pull casters by Line of Sight (LoS). Basically, throw your shield at a group of 2-3 casters and run back around a corner where they cant cast at you. Suddenly, they will come charging up to the corner to get in range, and you can just melee them to death before taking any significant damage at all! After all, casters are squishy.

I almost never go charging up into a group of casters unless I KNOW FOR SURE that I am not going to aggro anything else by charging. So, in summary, proper aura ahead of time, manageable pulls, and line of sight.

Hope that helps!

It is a common issue for Tanks but especially Pallies. If I have a choice of mob type to grind, farm, or quest off of I choose melee type mobs. If I can't avoid the casters or I'm in a group/instance the casters either get killed first and fast or are CCed and saved for last. Not only are casters mostly "un-mitigatable", they are much more difficult to keep agro with.

best thing, as the others have mentioned is to avoid casters or take away their ability to burn you down from a distance. It is one of those things that you can't do much about until later gear levels.

I don't think that potions would help too much

Just to sum it up: fight melee mobs.

Hammer of Justice and Repetance to stun casters in mid cast to disrupt thier spells and if you're a BELF, then Arcane Torrent to boot - combine that with everything Jerom said and you're set.

Actually, Repentance is a talent for rets only. (31 points?)

It's like this Mathewpart, hate casters. Prot pallies are just done in by casers. Our kryptonite.

The advice given is good. I like the los (line of site) pull method myself. Pull them to you. Funny thing about casters is they will run around a corrner to stand in front of you then cast. Making them avial for your Conceration, helping take down multi mob casters. Second that was talked about was Hammer of Justice, which is great for cutting off their spell and keeping them still. But with the 60 sec cooldown (or 45 if you choose to go with Imp Hammer, which most don't) it is short lived, though very effective.

Another option not talked about as of yet is Seal of Justice. Now though it doesn't stop them on command (like Hammer) it does have a fun way of procting when you need it. Yes it's half the time of Hammer at 2 sec stun, but it's great in stoping them mid cast and cancelling the spell.

Another option to add to your spell defence is Spell Warding and Pursuite of Justice, in a build like this.

Good luck.

Alot was touched on, another option I throw in, takes a little longer to kill, but being clothies, those casters cant take a crapton of dmg anyway. Use seal of wisdom judge, then throw up seal of light, at least with you meleeing them you will get some heals back. Throw in a hammer to stop them from casting to do more damage and if worse comes to worse, have a big two hander in your bags to boost your dps a bit on those casters as you really cannot mitigate their damage anyway.

Hell ive even done the aoe on casters with the seal rotation, not as good as melee, well no where close but it helps. Ive never had any problems with casters, or at least dying alot too them unless suddenly a ton come at me.

As for resistance, if you are fighting a fire caster throw up fire resis aura, same for shadow same for frost.
