When to choose INT over STAFollow

#1 Sep 09 2008 at 3:07 AM Rating: Decent
Greetings,

I understand that STA and INT is a Warlock's focus, and the more I read the more is seems STA is more important than INT. However, then do you choose INT over STA?

I am currently using Spiritchaser Staff of the Eagle and last night while in BRD I looted Diviner Long Staff of Intellect. With this new staff I will gain 189 Mana, and .22 to crit, but I will loose 170 heath points. So my gain in mana is better then what I would loose in health. However, wouldn't it be better to keep the health since that can be replenished easier with draining spells and overall provide more mana than the 189 gain?

It's always these types of situations that I have a hard time figuring out when to upgrade an item. Some feedback and guidelines would be great.

Thanks all!

P.S. I couldn't figure out how to link the item so it pop's up it's stats. Any feedback on that as well would be great.

Cheers!

I found it was better to get as much spell dmg as poss then focus on the other stats (worked for me anyway) as i spent most of the time drain tanking (more spell dmg=more health drained) well i think thats how it works lol not played my loc in a long time, i found i was draing more life than the mob's were hitting me for

I don't think there's a time to choose Int over Sta. You obviously need enough that you're not tapping every 10 seconds, but that comes easy enough if you're getting actual caster gear and not "of Stamina".

You just have to think that your green and blue bars are really one big bar, that goes down both on taking damage and casting spells. You want the total to be as high as possible.

I've never geared for INT. Not while leveling, and definitely not at end-game.

Stat Priority While leveling:

STA > Spell Dam

Stat Priority at 70

STA > Spell Hit > Spell Dam/Spell Crit

This is all changing with the upcoming 3.0 patch though, where the mechanics to Spell Hit are changing slightly, and there is another talent that gives up Hit. So in reality, it doesn't even matter.

IMHO, gear doesn't really matter until you hit Outland anyway. When I leveled my, pre patch 2.3/2.4 (whichever one it was that made it super easy to level and removed most of the elites in Azeroth), I never bought gear, and got no instance drops, and it was still easy. I think I was wearing a priest robe for about 20 levels cause it had more stamina than anything else I had run across so far. I also owned in BGs in the 40-49 bracket wearing said priest robe. So in short, gear doesn't really matter until you get to 70 and start running tougher instance/heroics. Even then, with patch 3.0 being "a few weeks away," certain class mechanics will change, like we'll actually need Spirit.

So in short I should use the new staff?

If it helps, I am level 58 affliction build.

Thanks for everyone's replies so far!

Never take Int over Stam. The point of taking Stam is to help with surviving solo questing and to make your mana-use more efficient in groups (via Life Tap).

Have to disagree a bit here with some of the above. For leveling I would suggest Hit > Stam > Spell Damage > everything else. Fact is, you won't find much spell hit gear while leveling so you end up gearing for stam and damage when available. But grab all the hit you can find while leveling. Don't stress gear too much while leveling, these are guidelines.

At 70 it's slightly different, Hit > Spell Damage > Stam > other stuff (for affliction, early raiding, instances) or Hit > Spell Damage > Spell Crit > Stam (for destro, mid-tier raiding).

Do not disregard the power of Spell Hit (WoWWiki article). Especially if you're interested in Destro. Currently the "cap" is 202 for raid bosses, lower for 5-toon dungeons. The point of reaching the Hit Cap is to free up those talent points that you would otherwise need to use up for Hit Rating.

Check out EJ's great PvE warlock thread. It's awesome sauce.

For PvP it's a whole different ball-game. But that's another thread.

Good luck!
