What are some good professions for paladins, I was thinking of taking up mining/eng, but since I am a blood elf, I was thinking enchanting and mining with the enchanting bonus BE get. Or, is smithing a better choice?

Tank, Healer, or DPS? Need to know before we can advise :)

Well, I am only at level 7 right now so I am not sure of the answer to that, but I wanted to start my profession early.

Only problem right now is that with WotLK coming out, can't 100% answer that anymore. We're not 100% sure what professions will benefit Paladins the most right now. I would recommend getting 2 gathering professions for money (unless you are already loaded) and waiting to see what happens exactly with the expansion.

Am just levelling an alt ret pally and am coming to terms with the lack of ranged weapons. I took engineering and am gratified that I now have some decent bombs and grenades to use. However lets wait and see what WoTLK brings

It's kind of funny seeing how people miss having ranged weapons. My Paladin was my first toon, so I had no idea what I was missing. I leveled Holy, and used the body pull/judgement to pull all mobs.

Honestly, it wasn't an problem at all. Paladins are so durable, that pulling multi mobs is not really an issue. I don't think I'd focus a profession around it.

Of course, the Eng helms are phenomenal. And so is mote farming. :)

As far as professions goes it depends on what utility you want from them.
  • 2 Gathering professions will give a lot of mats you can sell of get made into more useful items.
  • Blacksmithing (Weapon smith) - some nice BOP 2H weapons for a Ret paladin. But they might be replaced. Also not much listed so far for Wrath on WS patterns. Blacksmithing (Armor smith) - Nice BOP Armor again for Ret mainly Also not much listed so far for Wrath on WS patterns.
  • Wrath Blacksmithing - Glove and Wrist gem slots added to armor seems to be BOP but may not
  • Alchemy - BOP Trinket for any spec and potions, Transmutes and Flasks
  • Enchanting - Ring Enchants for any spec
  • Engineering - BOP Helms for any spec and mounts, bombs and possibly potion injectors
  • Wrath - Inscription - A seventh glyph equipped
  • Jewelcrafting - BOP Gems and trinkets for any spec
  • Leatherworking - Nothing that benefits Paladins unless a mail recipe is currently better then any plate pieces you can get your hands on. Wrath - Bracer enchants are BOP
  • Tailoring - BC - nothing much that is BOP, Wrath - Cloak enchant and Flying carpet

Two things; You don't need engineering, there's EZ-throw dynamite you can make on an alt. Even the lowest level of it is sufficient to **** off a mob.

Even gathering professions will add some sort of bonus in WotLK.

Last I checked there are the passive bonuses:
Alchemy: if you drink a potion you're able to make you get a bonus: around 20% more effect.
Miners: +500 health
Skinners: +25 critical strike rating
Herbalists: 3 minute cooldown 2000/15 second HoT

Stick with your initial choice of Engineering.

Personally, I had a lot of problems leveling my pally - just couldn't survive encounters with even or higher level mobs and had to resort to picking on lower level stuff and leveling slow.

Then I took up engineering - OMFG! - the dps increase and survivability improvement was spectacular!!!!!!!!!

The explosives not only give a pally additional AOE damage, but more importantly, AOE stun for CC.

The target dummies will distract adds long enough to finish off whatever you're currently fighing, thus more CC.

The invisibility trinket has come in handy a boat load of times.

The parchute cloak is a great peice of gear for tank/ret pally and the feather fall has its uses.

As a goblin engineer, I get rocket launcher and dragon gun, two items that help imensly (especially the dragon gun - beautiful AOE).

And as an added bonus you get the epic helms.

Let's not forget the greatest invention ever to come out of engineering:

EXPLOSIVE SHEEP!
