Make a character and find out. After you figure out if you actually wanna play the job come back and see us. You can read the threads at the top of the forum for more information. I recommend getting to level 15 before you bother.

To the op:

Actually playing a priest has to be about the least bland class i can think of, that includes pvp and pve.

As for the actual versatility the priest class offers, well the three trees offer excellent choices for both pve and pvp.

As with any class you will receive more buttwhoopings when you first start playing, but the priest is actually not as bad to level as many people think. also endgame for a priest is extremly promising.

So is all level pvp for that matter. As for actual things you can do as a priest.

well lets see. shadow priests (what you should level as) are great in endgame content and raids. they give both mana and life back to the party and can really give a raid party a very big advantage. for five man content you may see some problems with getting groups but its honestly not bad at all. most healers will die for you either way. I belive my guildmasters wife once said it best "i will let the tank die before i will let my mana battery die" and that is pretty much how any mana user in your raid or instance group will feel about you as a shadow priest.

Also they shine in pvp but learning shadow priest pvp is no cakewalk. you will die alot. but in the end you can be more than enough challenge for every class to the point where no class will ever consider you a "free kill" and if they do then they will most likely be the ones dying. but like i said. its HARD to get good.

disc/holy priest is another way of playing the priest game. while some say its a healing role DO NOT BE FOOLED while this is true for the pve disc/holy priest the pvp disc priest deserves a much better title than healer. they play a huge pvp role by tanking damage, mitigating damage, dealing good damage, healing themselves (cause you are often the focus target) and healing others. yes you do heal alot as a disc/holy priest.. but you are so much more than that.

as for instancing and raiding you will play the role of a healer, you will excell in keeping a single target alive. disc/holy priests are by far the greatest single target healer in the game for pve for bursty damage. they prevent damage spikes very well. and will fit into any healing role in the game.. for the most part though you will not fill a raid spot as a non focus healer in a raid. your best suited for a single target heal.

Then there is the holy tree, this is a very VERY good healing tree for pve, but sadly it falls a bit short in pvp mostly due to how well disc suits itself to pvp.

So there ya have it. the main roles of a priest. they are all fun and exciting, what you saw on youtube was a priest running a "smite priest" type thing. this is a very fun thing to play on those offdays where you just wanna have fun. but its mostly a novelty build that is not really taken seriously (at least not until wotlk then it will be SMITE ON!!!!!!!)

in the end i encourage you to try the priest, although it can be very difficult and aggrivating at times once you reach the upper level of what the priest as a class can do.. you will fear no other player in pvp and know that you always have a raid spot in pve.

Hope this helps and good luck to ya.

There's always rogues though.

Although rouges are very very tough competition for us as a shadow priest. Most times a 1v1 with a rouge is a fair fight to the bitter end. they key to rouge killing is to get them to cloak early with a fake setup for a burst. and trinket the right stunning skills and eat all the others. then when there cloak ends you dot bubble and kite as much as possible. I know its very VERY hard to kill a rouge. but trust me it has been done and can be one of the most exciting fights you will ever have.

I remember i had a huge 1v1 fight with a season 3 rouge in arathi basin for about two minutes i almost killed him numerous times just to have him vanish or do another trick to stealth outa combat and heal up. However i healed up aswell. so in the end he won but still i did not feel bad at all for loosing that battle. and there are many MANY other rouges that i have beat so is all good.

And besides the disc/holy tree can deal with a single rouge pretty well also. the only time a disc/holy preist will have trouble is when they are facing the armor ignoring effects of a s3/4 rouge that is outgearing them considerably. other than that a rouge for a disc priest can be somewhat of a easy 1v1 fight.

Watching a video is never like the real thing, don't you think? If priests were terribly boring would lots of people play them? Take into consideration individual tastes also...what appeals to you may not appeal to me and vice versa. Priests are a fun and versatile class for many folks, but not every class will appeal to every person. Best way is to play your own priest and find out (as has already been suggested). :-)

Well, rogues counter shadow priests pretty darn hard. Don't forget a lot of times PvP balance is arranged around a rock paper scissors theme. I will say I have loads of fun with my spriest in PvP, but it isn't all about the dps for me...I do a lot of off healing, mana burning, silencing and dispelling which is more of a support role. Still valuable, still needed and still fun.
