What skills are most vital?Follow

#1 Sep 04 2008 at 1:52 AM Rating: Decent
I won't get into all the details, but I'm a gimp player. I have to play a fairly low maintenance class because I'm very slow and I don't see very well, and one hand doesn't work as well as I'd like. I mostly solo and only group with real friends who don't care that I'm gimp :) I don't pvp or raid. I'm trying to sort out what skills are vital to a hunter, and what I can do without. For instance, my son suggested that I could do without wing clip because I can use freeze traps to get to range distance instead, and freeze traps are more versatile. So, right now on my hotkey bar I have raptor strike, hunter's mark, pet attack, autoshoot, concussive shot, arcane shot, serpent sting, freeze trap, and mend pet. Are there any other critical skills I should have available? I'm going down the beast mastery tree and am level 22 atm. Thanks!

You've certainly chosen the right class if you want simple play. It is quite capable of rather complex playstyles and problem solving, but if you want simple, you get simple.

I would make sure I have some addons to simplify my life, should I be in your situation.

An actionbar addon like Bartender3 to organize my actionbars for easy access to anything vital, and organizing non-vital skills elsewhere.

A threatmeter to make sure I know how much threat I have in comparison to my pet. This will make sure you don't have to deal with too many mobs on yourself instead of safely at range.

zHunter to gather things like traps, stings and so on in one convenient location. However, this will require you to be a clicker. I don't know how much mouse mobility you have, if any.

As for skills:

All ranged skills are useful to have keyed nearby. Auto, Arcane, Multi, Concussive, sting.
Some melee skills are also useful. Wing Clip (traps are on cooldown), Raptor.
Traps that are useful include Freezing and Frost.

Hunter's Mark is a manahog for grinding/farming. Don't bother with it. Put it on a bar further away in case you need it later.

Damn, gotta go. If no one else replies until I get back, I'll finish this post later.

Just meh. I prefer Bartender3 over Bongos.

well I recently had my first born earlier this year (so I guess its not too recent but nonetheless). I was able to level my hunter while holding him in one arm and playing with just one arm. I used the mouse and found that being a clicker was the easiest. Pressing both the right and left mouse buttons would make me run, then I'd stop send in my pet and start shooting away.

I've even topped the DPS charts in instances as well as BG's playing with one hand.

Yeah, a hunter is very easy to level. However it become much harder later when you have to master your class for Heroics and raids.

Heroics yes, raids not so much. Or I'm just lucky. The only traps I've been asked to lay in a raid in the past two months is a frost trap in a doorway. Misdirect such-and-such to tank, keep pet out of fires, remember how to FD/drink on long trash pulls. The rest is spamming Steady Shot until I have to feign. It's kinda boring actually.

There's not that much that is vital for levelling a hunter.

I'd say the skills that are most important are Auto Shot, Pet Attack, Feign Death & Freeze trap plus your Talent skills (intimidation, BW etc)

You can probably get to 70 just using these skills.

A small note about the Wing Clip issue. You could make a macro to both Wing Clip and Raptor Strike at the same time.

/cast Raptor Strke
/cast Wing Clip

You normally want to hit it once juuuuuuuust as the mob is about to enter your melee zone (Thus activating Raptor Strike on the next melee swing), and then spam it to make sure you get off a Wing Clip.

You could use a few Macro,s for various scenarios , like you i am a slow player but that does not affect me that much , i tend to use just a few of the spells that hunters have anyway and at high level a few macro,s can help a lot , or if you set up your shots on the standard Blizzard bars you can switch to a different set for different situations , i guess most people forget about the fact we all have the ability to switch to 6 different bars by using those arrows in the middle of the standard bar , do others use them as i do not think i have ever seen them mentioned ?

Honestly, if you move carefully you can get to 70 with nothing but Pet attack auto shot, but that's hardly fun is it? :D

In your situation I'd think something like this:

1: Pet Attack
2: Auto Shot
3: Arcane
4: Multi

Then depending on which of your hands has more mobility I'd have either:
5: Freezing Trap
6: Raptor/Wingclip Macro

OR have them on a side or bottom left/right bar near the center for clicking.

I'd think you could pretty easily cover most circumstances with that set up.

I really appreciate all your responses. They have been extremely helpful. I started out as a druid because I thought playing a healer would be fairly easy, but it seems most people don't care to group at low levels in this game, and chasing runners is a pain for me. So I thought a pet class would be good, started a hunter, and really fell in love with my Durotar tiger. I saw a video of a mage playing who had 6 hot bars filled up with stuff and I was really hoping I would not have to do that, and you all have greatly relieved my mind. Thanks a lot!

And my mouse hand is my slow hand, fishing is the one thing I have not yet mastered, but hot keys work very well for me. I try to hotkey everything I possibly can.

If you plan on running dungeons in the future, it would definitely benefit you to learn how to chain trap.

It's essentially setting a freezing trap before the initial pull (at least ten seconds before hand) and when the pull begins, lead your foe to the trap. While you're fighting the other mobs, keep an eye on your cooldown for your trap and when it's up, set it close to your trapped foe so that it will run right back into it again.

It takes some time to get used to and become proficient with, but it's a handy tool and it will help to keep your party and yourself alive. :D
