Raiding Threat CycleFollow

#1 Sep 02 2008 at 11:32 AM Rating: Decent
Hello fellow tanks, I hope you have been getting plenty of beatings! :)

Anyhow...My question to you fellow tanks is the following:

When raiding, what is your preferred order of skills/spells to generate threat?

This could be a good question considering the fact that you have crazy DPSers in the raid who are dealing so much damage that they have to hold back because you can't keep up.

I know some might say Devastate or Sunder all the way but I know for a fact that there are better ways to get aggro through better cycles that have things like Shield Slam in them.

I am wondering if this question does indeed have any relevance what so ever, does devastate/sunder suffice?

I want to generate so much damn threat that the rogue with 8/8 t6 and dual glaives will cry.

Thanks for your time.

P.S. I have a 66 warrior who i used to tank with pre-tbc and my current Tauren Warrior is 32 and am hoping to get him to u70 before wotlk.

Oh, tanking is the ****! :D

I like to start a fight with a hefty Shield Slam and then work my way into the following rotation: Be sure to keep Shield Block up and use Revenge/Shield Slam when they aren't on cooldown and Devastate when they are. It usually comes out to be Shield Slam, Revenge, x3 Devastates or something like that. Rinse and repeat. If you find you have too much rage (which you will in raids) use Heroic Strike to dump some. Also be sure to keep TClap, Demo Shout, and Spell Reflect (this last one is only if necessary, the robots in TK come to mind).

I've only tanked up to Lewtreaver and Sol, but I stayed on top of the threat charts each fight.

What I've always did was have Shield slam, Shield block (to proc Revenge) and Revenge on CD at all times, and spam Devastate in between. If you have over (30%?) rage then then throw in Heroic strikes (since it goes off your next normal attack, you can still spam Devastate, Shield block/revenge... and not effect that rotation).

I even threw up my own Demo and T. Clap just to help the healers (and so I knew it up be up 100% of the time), if there was a 5/5 imp Demo in the party it would override, if it was not kept refreshed at least my crappy 2/5 would be up lol.

So start of the fight:
Shield slam, Devastate, Devastate (Usually have nice rage due to skipping block), start up with shield block, Devasate, *revenge proc'd* Revenge, shield slam, Block, Devastate.... etc.

That's the rough idea of how I did it. Prolly how everyone else does it too lol, I'm not reinventing the wheel here. Things change, during the 1st couple of Devastates you'll prolly dodge/parry and have Revenge before Shield block... that's cool too.

*edit* SomnusSleeper beat me to what I was going to say =) Well at least we agree lol.

Maximum threat cycle is always:

dev, dev, ss, rev

always.

Now, if you have the rage, smack Heroic Strike. Your OT should be popping TC and other warriors should be taking care of shouts, but if you don't have the warriors pick up one and work it if you need to. Replace a dev, never a SS or Rev.

No tank can hold threat against any dps'er that is significantly over-gearing the tank. If the tank is in late t4 / early t5 and the rogue is in full t6, then the tank loses if the rogue let's fly. But against equally geared dps'ers, you will more than hold your own with the above rotation.

Shield Slam, Dev, Dev, Revenge. Hit SB whenever it's off cooldown.

If it's a low-rage enviroment (offtanking on Gurtogg Bloodboil) drop the Shield Slams and just spam Devastate, Revenge if it's possible but it often isn't.

Uh, isn't it - Revenge first, Shield Slam second, fill up remaining time with Devastate?
How can you skip Revenge in a low rage situation?

In terms of raiding there will almost never be a low rage situation. You will be getting hit for anywhere from 2-8k depending upon your progression which should provide you with plenty of rage.

You can't proc Revenge if you're not getting hit, which you aren't on Gurtogg (it's similar to offtanking Moroes, if Moroes had a knockback/threat drop on the tank and you started damage on him immediately).

That depends on your gearing and the level of progression you're tanking. My threat gear in BT means I'll be fine on rage. I'm getting hit often enough that I'm able to do what I need to do. On the other hand, if I wear my full survival gear, everything up until Mother becomes a very low rage environment. We were trying a lot of new healers in BT last night, some of whom weren't very geared, so I decided to throw on my set that I would wear in Sunwell. My rage intake got absolutely murdered.

As others have set, make sure you have Dev x2,SS, Rev in some fashion, in a rotation. If you're the one applying TC/demo, replace the devastates with those two abilities when you apply them. HS when you get extra rage. The rotation is actually pretty simple. That's why it baffles me how many tanks manage to ***** it up. I saw a WWS the other day of a tank who had less devastates than both SS and revenge, and I was amazed.

Oh, I get it. I did not make the connection - don't have experience with Gurtogg.
Sorry for the noise.
