WotLK Paladin FAQ?Follow

#1 Sep 02 2008 at 10:49 AM Rating: Good
Well as you guys/gals may or may not have noticed, I haven't been posting as much lately. My desire to play the game has waned for a while, and I've mostly just been Retting around in BGs to kill time when I'm bored, and I haven't even done that in a while. As such, I'm not as interested in maintaining the FAQ for when the expansion finally rolls around. Also, I'm not going to be at my current job anymore in a couple of weeks, and that's where I do the majority of my posts and where I did all of my FAQ work.

So I guess the purpose of this post is to see who would want to pick it up, since I won't be doing updates to it. With the expansion coming out, and the vast changes to every spec, there's going to be a lot more information to add, edit, and remove. I'd be willing to help out with the creation, i.e. give advice on formatting, content, etc... You can use all, some, or none of the work I have in my current FAQ if you want, it doesn't really matter to me. I just don't want it to be like it was when the last expansion came out and we didn't have an updated FAQ for 6 months. It seems they are starting to finalize some of the talents, work out more of the kinks, and we will probably see these talents and spells go live in a 3.0.0 patch in a couple months, so any work done now probably won't see many changes from now until that patch.

So Cap - your new job actually makes you work instead of visit forums? :) Just kidding.

It would be awesome if someone who was doing beta could help out. Some real hands on experience would be nice to have.

Just FYI, I don't think that that delay was the worst problem ever. By the time you had the guide up and running, everything in it had been fairly beaten to death by the wise men of the Paladin class forum and could be taken as fact. As a result, it's one of the best class FAQs on the site, if not THE best, imho.

I'd rather not see a rush to build a new FAQ until after more of us have played around with the new content. With so many game mechanics being overhauled, I really wouldn't trust any ol' Beta tester at the moment.

Thank you for the heads-up though about your imminent productivity ;-) It's a shame to lose your insights to mere work.

Edit- changed "man" to "men" in second sentence, per original intent.

Well ideally it would be continually updated as more insights/discoveries are made (which I have done a couple times in the past, especially towards Ret Paladins). The original FAQ wasn't updated because Cathela just kinda... left, and we didn't know if he was going to make a new one or what and I didn't want that to happen again. I like seeing the people that have come up and said that because of the FAQ they decided to make a Paladin, or go that extra mile with their Paladin, or not delete theirs out of frustration. And it's during these periods of transition with the expansion where we can help paint a good picture of the Paladin for the newbies who just started the game and don't know what's happening, and the oldies who are starting up again and want to know what happened to their class.

I would be most interested in helping out with a Wrath FAQ, though I in no way feel qualified to head the project. I think it would be great to have someone more knowledgeable in the mechanics of the class and what not than I keep an FAQ up to date, but again, I'd be more than willing to add any input I have to the project. So to anyone who is thinking of taking on this challenge keep me in mind as you'll have my support wherever I can give it :)

I have been milling over some thoughts regarding the coming expansion, mostly regarding Prot spec, and have thought about posting those thoughts here on the forum, I just haven't gotten around to putting them in a format that would make sense to most people, lol. Not sure what this has to do with an FAQ, lol, but maybe it will lend some "food for thought" so to speak to helping update our great FAQs.

I'm not sure what qualifications you need to make a FAQ. When I made mine, I had barely turned 70, had never raided, and wasn't too much into PvP. As long as it's informative and most people agree with it, then it'll be good.

Anyone who wants to make the FAQ can do what I did, post it in their Private Journal and put public access to it. This way I and others can make comments and recommendations to fine tune it.

its a shame that you won't be able to continue it yourself capjack. you're one of the few here who i've never seen anyone have a negative post about, which i think says a lot for you as someone people respect and would listen to and also says a lot about the quality of your advice.

on that note, i know i don't have quite that qualification, but i think keeping an up to date FAQ would be greatly helpful. if noneof the more qualified posters here have the time/desire to keep it up i'd be willing to do it. and if i do, i'd definitely appreciate help (maulgak...) lol. i've never claimed to be the smartest pally out there, so if one of them wants it i'll gladly just help them too.

How about a wiki? Then, a couple different people can update as needed.

A wiki would work as well, kinda like what you did with the Pre-kara Holy one. Only slight problem I have with the wiki route is the need to click more than once to get to it. Gotta click into the thread, then click on the link to the FAQ. I guess it's not that big of a deal, I just wish the Wiki was a little more accessible to casual people who are just checking the forums out to get their information. However, the Wiki does have some nice advantages such as clicking on links to other parts of the page as well as a much prettier format, as well as the entire community being able to update it, which is both a blessing and a curse at times.

Maybe we can talk to one of the admins about having a direct link to a wiki vs going the route I took for the Holy guide. It would be nice if you could click on a sticky, and it takes you directly to a specific wiki.

Well I just asked in the Site Feedback forum, so we'll see how they feel about that. I'm pretty sure it's not currently possible, but maybe they can get some code out that will allow you to do that.

Wordaen sumbitted it to the dev team. Haven't heard back yet (at least not in Site Feedback).

Still haven't heard anything back, I'm honestly not holding my breath for that kind of feature.

On a slightly related note, today is the 1 year anniversary of the current FAQ!

oops

Well it seems to me the only one who has volunteered to make the FAQ is tool, and I'm fine with this. I like YJMark's suggestion of making it a Wiki, even if you can't directly link to it from a sticky or post. So I would suggest that you start making it up Tool and I and the others here can help shape it. So if you want to start working on it, I would suggest that you can go ahead and throw the Wiki up there, indicate it's a work in progress at the top, and have a link to a thread in here for feedback/suggestions.

will do. i'll try to get it started in the next day or so. pallies are supposed to be getting a pretty major pass in the next build or 2, so i'll probably just set up the wiki for now and maybe put up some more generic info for now.
#19 Sep 10 2008 at 10:40 AM Rating: Good
Yeah that would probably be best, wait to see what they do as that will probably be the last major pass with minor tweaking afterwards.

And I almost got away with it too, if it wasn't for you snot-nosed kids!

And Maul... Tool is making the main FAQ, not a prot FAQ. Losie isn't out of a job.

quick question CapJack.. do you mind if copy your FAQ and just update sections with the wrath info? it would save on time and make the formatting of the FAQ much simpler for me. also a few of the general info sections really don't need to change.
