Help! Makeover my mage!Follow

#1 Aug 31 2008 at 5:36 PM Rating: Decent
Hello mage gurus!

Can you please take a look at my young (lvl 12)mage character and see what else I need to work up or plan to get in the future? My current professions are Skinning and Leatherworking but reading through the forums, I'm thinking of switching to Tailoring (to replace LW), and perhaps switch to Enchanting/Alchemy too. I just want to (re)start right, if you know what I mean? My secondary skills are cooking and fishing but thinking of ditching fishing and go for first-aid.

I'm also enhancing my frost talent but would eventually want to put some arcane as well.

Take note that I'm new to wow and to the world of rpg at that, and I just found out that I panic during crowd attack. I read in forums that if I'm into crowd battles, mage is the best character. Should I switch characters now then?

Thanks in advance folks!

It seems that this is your first character.

A bit of advice: take up two gathering professions, they are easy for the new player to use and make money (herbalism + skinning, mining + skinning).

For your secondary professions you can have all 3 (cooking/fishing/first aid), there is no limit on those. Just the primary (2) professions that you choose.

You are right in dropping the LW as it has almost 0 benefit to you. Tailoring can be nice, but the real benefits come much later, where before then you could have used a gathering profession to make some money (selling what you gather on the auction house) and be able to level that new profession when you hit 60/70 all at once.

In crowd attack mages become better and better as we level, at level 12 we don't have much with us, I believe you would have just gotten the first rank of polymorph (sheep) and frost nova -- use these to keep your enemies at bay, when you pull an extra, nova, sheep one, burn the other one down and go to the one you sheeped.

I checked out your talent build already (grats on 14), I wouldn't have taken the points in frost warding at those are situational at best. You will want to be decreasing your cast time for your primary nuke (frostbolt) max that out, and move farther on, picking up improved frost nova, frostbite, permafrost, ice shards, shatter are all amazing talents for leveling.

Spend your Talents as adviced by Anobix the Wise.

Gear priority:
1. +intellect
2. + stamina or +dmg,
3. spirit is of lower priority until you hit level 70.
4. forget +armour of any kind

Primary Skills:
1. Tailoring & enchanting (recommended for high level)
2. Herbalism and Alchemy
3. any 2 gathering proessions to help with your finance, switch to new profession after level 70

Secondary skills:
1. First Aid (very useful self healing)
2. Cooking (nice stamina and spirit buff from most foods, and +spell damage buffs at higher level)
3. Fishing (IF you have the time)

Weapon skills:
Don't bother using any form of weapon to hit anything, you are suppose to use your mana (spells).
mage without mana = machine gun without bullets.
You never see Rambo bashing enemies with his machine gun like a stick or knife, do you?

The only addition I want to add to your post is to make sure to level your wand, it is a good saver of mana, and at lower levels can actually out-dps your spells.

I agree with Anobix and Whitegreen with what they have both said. Wands are definitely an important skill to keep a high level.

I thought I might say a few things about talents (from my experience). I learnt that talents have a surprising amount of impact on your game.
I would highly suggest going to a Mage Trainer and asking to unlearn your current talents.

Frost warding is sort of a useless talent, and elemental precision isn't needed until you get to long boss fights where you need every last drop of mana. Also I wouldn't have picked up Arcane Subtlety either, putting your talents elsewhere will have greater impact.

My top three to pick up would be-
5/5 - Improved frostbolt - Its helps you kill things much faster.
3/3 - Frostbite - Occasionally freezes your target in place (like frost nova.. except it happens randomly)
5/5 - Ice shards - Does double the bonus of your crits.
