Getting Behind Target in StealthFollow

#1 Aug 26 2008 at 11:47 AM Rating: Decent
I am a new rogue player (lvl 24 currently) and have a couple of questions regarding moving in stealth. My question stems primarily from my recent experience in PVP (WSG 45-50 plays at level 19) and not so much PVE. In PVE I have not needed stealth very much as it seems I can just mow down most opponents at my level.

Question 1
Do rogues usually target and then move behind or move behind and then target before garrote or ambush etc?

Question 2
When moving in stealth to get behind the target I usually move counterclockwise at a several meter distance then in a straight line after getting at least partially behind the target. Do you experienced rogues do the same or move clockwise or some other pattern (i.e., straight in with improved stealth) or do you consciously try to vary your approach to target in PVP?

Thank you

Targeting doesn't matter. Target whenever you feel comfortable.

Usually I go for them in the quickest way possible without being seen.

Sometimes I go straight at them infront, behind, sideways.

Doesn't matter as long as you are sure you can get your opener without being unstealthed.

If you're opening with Cheap Shot, just run right at them. There's very little chance they'll see you in time. And even if they do, they still have to try to attack. People aren't usually fast to respond, unless they already know you're coming, so just make sure to be stealthed far enough in advance. Throw in a sprint if you really want to make sure it works.

For Garrote or Ambush, getting behind isn't too hard. You could still sprint right at them, jump, turn around in mid-air, and boom.

I really don't like being slow around other players. A mob looking away will pretty much never notice you. A player tends to move around more unpredictably, and you can't be sure of whether or not they know you're there. A mob turns at you and growls. A player waits to smack you upside the head.

When I was running BGs for honor (and was Deep Sub), I don't recall having any "pattern" to my attack angle other than to try to get behind. You're much harder to detect from behind, period. How I got into position was more a function of the surroundings, other enemies, other team-mates, etc. Seems kinda.. I dunno.. to have a specific direction to circle around an opponent.

Sometimes I'd target before getting into position, but my "Openers" macro uses /startattack so it'll target what's right in front of me before attempting the attack. But, either way it doesn't really matter when you target the enemy.

Keep a good eye on the situation in which you're fighting.

If your target is near to their own graveyard or is just mounting, the approaching direction generally doesn't matter; your target will be sitting down relaxing and cursing about that overpowered warrior that just kicked his ***, he won't see a rogue coming (providing he didn't see you stealth 30 yards away). On the other hand, people who are in the process of mounting up will not be moving towards you while you move towards them, lengthening the time before you can get off a cheap shot. This is something to keep in mind as well.

If you're not too far from a big fight, your target will be on it's toes. Especially without improved stealth, approaching from the front will have a good chance of your target seeing and hitting you before you can get an opener of.

If you're jumping into the middle of a big fight, your approaching direction usually does not matter since the target will have somebody else targeted and will be too busy running about and fighting. The chance that he or she sees you in time, notices, and manages to get you out of stealth is extremely slim. However, remember which enemy you're facing. Every class that has an instant AOE (mainly mage and paladin) should be approached with caution; if your target in question (for example a mage) is running away from the battle to gain some distance for a spell or bandage, there's a good chance he or she will throw out a simple AOE if you approach from the front.

Overal you should try to head for the rear whenever possible, it severely lessens the chance of them discovering you. There are just some exceptions. The best tip I can give is the one I opened my post with; keep a good eye on the situation in which you're fighting. If your target has just killed somebody he might be distracted. If your target was moving towards a big battle and suddenly stopped there's a chance he is typing or doing something AFK. Take note of your surroundings and (ab)use your knowledge.

On a small sitenote; all this is BG-related only. If you're doing a 2v2 match in the arena, you should expect your enemies to know there's a rogue there; it's not that hard for somebody to figure out that a player is missing when it's 2v1 in a 2v2 fight.

Some addons will alert a player when they've been targeted. I think even Omen will show large red "Aggro" letters in the middle of your screen if you've been targeted by someone, and this holds true for being targeted by stealthed players/mobs. If there are a lot of friendly players around me in a BG, I don't worry too much about targeting someone ASAP, but if I'm stealthed and approaching someone on my own, I hold off targeting until the last possible moment. I know I've caught a lot of Rogues/Druids sneaking up on me because they targeted me long before they got close enough to attack. Just something to keep in mind.

News to me, but I'm mostly a moron. Didn't know the target alert worked with players.... That's definitely worth some investigation.

Addons/mods that show where a stealthed person is are illegal and should be reported.

Omen doesn't do that. Omen only reports you as having aggro or being targeted when you are under attack by an NPC. Omen has no PvP use, and even defaults to turning itself off in a BG.

I'm pretty sure I've had xperl notify me when I'm being targetted by mobs, not too sure about players though.

This only works via a script that the addon runs that checks all available targets and their target. It won't work for stealthed players.
