What is the difference between Block Value of your Shield VS Block Rating?

Block rating is what you wanr to stack as it increases your chance to block.

Block value is the amount of damage mitigated in a block.

i.e if you have a block value of 10, and you block a hit of 100 damage, you woudl get 90 damage.

Hope that helps

There's a little more to how much damage you would take if you blocked a hit once you factor in armor/other mitigation and the ORDER in which it's applied...

But the main point is true :D Block Rating is for Block %, Block Value is for how much damage your block reduces.

Quick question about block rating which I think is right but just need confirmation.

Once you hit uncrushable, extra block rating is useless since it is already at the end of the attack table?

Yes, once you hit uncrushable then additional block rating is wasted.

Losie, I just wanted to provide an easy to understand answer of the difference between the two, the type of question indicates somone who is fairly new to understanding tanking mechanics.

Things like the order of mitigation would be something that a more advanced player may enquire about or want to understand, hence me keeping the explanation simple.

Cheers

Is the order of mitigation covered in any sticky? I've read through them while playing, but may have missed something...

I'd consider looking at a sticky entitled "Defense and Mitigation" but that's just me.

To be fair, more Block Rating after you're uncrushable will still increase your chance to block while Holy Shield is down. This won't reduce your chance to be crushed though unless you somehow have 87.4% or more avoidence WITHOUT Holy Shield already so though it isnt entirely useless it doesn't do much for you.

Yea.. I'm all for simplicity, just thought I'd mention it because of the numbers. Incidentally, Block comes after all of the multiplicative factors, which means if you add up all of the sources contributing to Block Value (besides JUST the Shield as the OP asked) that will be a flat reduction on how much damage you take. Most mitigation sources that reduce damage by a fixed amount are applied before armor though. For real good information on the order of mitigation, the only real resource available is to check out every form of mitigation on wowwiki and see where it lies.
