I'm new to mage raiding. Just got my little gnome to 70 recently and procured his spellstrike and am in the midst of crafting my spellfire and looking for a crafter for belt of blasting.

Anyways to the point. My gear is dungeons blues, rep rewards, and the epics I've been able to aquire so far from crafting and pug kara's. My problem is I'm having alot of mana issues. The other night on nightbane I used 5 charges of my mana gem (made a second one mid fight) and 3 mana pots. If your wondering why it took so long we 9 manned the encounter.

My question is is this normal or am I missing something. I've got 25% crit before molten armor (was using mage armor for the extra regen) so I figure that is part of it.

That is typical for that fight at your gear level, especially if you were using AoE during the "Air Phases". In fact you probably should have been using mana pots to on cool down. If you feel you need better mana efficiency you can always switch to 10/48/3. Clearcast will make a noticeable difference in mana, but you will do slightly less dmg without the IV. (Or maybe you will do more damage if you are always OOM during molten fury which is very bad.)

I was using pots on cooldown and yha I was dropping aoe during the air phase but only my two most powerful, DB and BW. I never ran outta mana but I thought that having to use that many pots/gems was a bit over the top and I was missing something.

I've thought about switching to 18/40/3 until I get better geared but I thought that might too much of a dps hit.

Yes in a long fight you'll be using pots and gems as a mana source. If possible try to get a shammy or a shadow priest (or both) in your group, it will make a big difference (enough that you may be able to use molten armor).

And if not this, a paladin keeping up Judgement of Wisdom makes a huge difference too.

Nightbane is just really long, plain and simple unless your over geared.

As you will see, in just about every encounter over and at 7-8 minutes you will be chain chugging pots. Does not really matter your spec you will have to do it, just how the game is configured now.

Now, if your going OOM while using pots and gems on cooldown and getting in a full evocate, then 10/48/3 may be the solution.

I personally never had many mana issues with 2/48/11 though.
