Brand new newb seeks playstyle adviceFollow

#1 Aug 22 2008 at 11:29 PM Rating: Decent
I read the FAQ and went through the first four pages of the forum so far, and wondered if I could get a little advice. I've been playing WoW 5 days.

I want to be a healer, able to solo quests during the week and group with my friends on the weekends. I don't care for tanking for a group. I probably won't PvP. I can't see myself raiding, but 5-man groups, duos, and trios are my cup of tea. I did Ragefire and Wailing Caverns on my hunter and liked it a lot.

I've read that many people play feral style until 70 and then change, but I'd rather grow up in the spec I intend to use :) I was looking at the 11/0/50 resto spec; I know it will be slower than feral but that's OK. Do you think this spec will fit me? I also have printed out the 34/0/27 moonkin spec which looks pretty fun, but did not know if that will have enough healing in the endgame. My old EQ guildmates are all 70s and heavily into Heroics and dailies, whatever those are ;p I'd be grateful for any advice, as a great many of these posts are Greek to me! Thanks :)

If I were you I'd go with the 34/0/27 spec. As a boomkin you can still heal the Azeroth instances as long as your group aren't complete fools. You should have plenty of int and spi so your mana and mp5 should be sufficient.

As for the endgame, if you want to heal heroics/kara etc. then you MUST be resto spec with full-on healing gear. A moonkin spec will not work. Hence I will say to lvl up as Moonkin, healing instances as you go on, and when you hit sixty something respec to tree form and practise your full-on healing in some easier outlands instances. That way you will lvl quite quickly, but also have a feel for healing in tree form before you hit the big end-game instances.

Restokin is fine for Heroics/Kara, it actually has a nice boost in stats from Dreamstate/Lunar Guidance/Moonglow. In fact, most of us Ferals have healed some heroics and parts of Kara as feral spec. I would recommend leveling from 20-40 as feral, then Respecing Balance. Put your next three points in Dreamstate, then fill out your Resto tree. The main reason Feral is the suggested leveling spec is that you can save all your mana for healing, and use energy (cat form) and rage (bear form) to kill mobs; you never have to stop to drink water.

Incorrect. I'm almost totally Balance (50-0-11) and I can main heal heroics and kara easily, even the hard ones like Heroic Magisters. As long as you collect healing gear as you go (dungeon drops no one wants, quest rewards, pvp pieces) you'll be fine. EDIT: My Heals btw are +1468

Oh and just so you know Jellia, Heroics are the 'hard' mode for dungeons, with extra/better drops, harder fights and badges that you ca collect to turn in for brilliant gear. Dailies are the nickname for Daily quests which can be repeated once a day, the main purpose being to earn gold.

Considering I haven't offspec healed in a long long time, the best I could heal as a balance druid was heroic ramps. I think I had about 1200 heals then though. So who really knows.

I would agree with the rest, going some form of the Restokin build, also called Dreamstate, would suit you well. You'll be able to kill and still have the ability to heal quite well. The joy of a druid though is you're versatile so going from one spec to another will be your saving grace.

But through it all, I would try out all the specs to see what you think fits you best. You may think that resto is your cup of tea and find out that feral is something that's more fun for you to play.

Edit: It's early, I'm at work, and I'm still hungover. Had to fix some typos.

Thank you all so much for the advice. I've put it to good use already. It's sometimes difficult to jump into a new MMO headfirst. Thanks for making it a bit easier!

Well first of all good luck and enjoy the game.

Second, a 34/0/27 spec really isn't a bad idea. You could start putting points into balance 'till about level 30. Then from 30 to 40, use ten points to enhance your healing a bit with some restoration skills, and then do the last 14 points in balance. By the time you reach 60 you'll be entering the resto tree once again, and by that time you'll really start to need it.

The main thing to remember is that up to level 60, you can heal, tank or DPS anything regardless of your spec; you might just want some resto points (the ones from 30-40) to get into the role of healing a bit better. Once you reach 60 you'll have just rounded up your balance talents and can go back to the resto talents you'll need more and more as you progress trough 60-70 content.

In the end, going whatever you feel most comfortable with is the best thing to do pre-70 (after which hardcore people will start telling you where to put your points to be most effective).

It's a long climb to 70 but fun! I'd go feral so you can actually get there in a timely manner. Collect healiing gear as you go and keep a healing set on you. That way you should be able to heal on your way up but still be able to DPS for leveling.
