What about in PvE? What makes a 5-stack of Deadly +16% damage better than Instant +8% application (effectively +40% damage)?
For the sake of ease we will make up numbers. Start off going with Improved Poisons
A pretend weapon that has a 1.5 second speed.
Deadly Poison does 180 over 12 seconds, or 45 every 3 seconds per stack.
So a stack of 5 would do 900 over 12 seconds or 225 every 3 seconds, without Vile Poisons.
Over an 8 minute pretend fight, where the only thing we do is auto attack with this weapon.
That's 320 swings of that sword. Averaged out at 28% chance of landing a poison you will get a little over 89 swings that land poison. 89 swings spread out evenly over those 320 swings is every 3rd then 4th swing is a poison swing. With that in mind, it would take 4.5 seconds to get the full 5 ticks on the mob and maintain that the whole fight.
So that's basically 159 ticks of poison at 225 damage for a total of 35775.
Now, with Vile poisons, your Deadly Poison does 208 damage over 12 seconds, or 52 every 3 seconds. A stack of 5 works out to 1040 damage at 260 every 3 seconds.
With a 20% chance of landing a poison you will get 64 poisoned swings. Spread out evenly over all swings, thats 1 poison after every 5 swings. That's a whole 9 seconds to get 5 stacks on a mob and maintain that the whole fight.
So that's basically 157 ticks of poison at 260 damage for a total of 40820.
Granted, this is very basic and simple, and real fighting takes a lot more into account, but in the end it works out that, that 8% increase chance to add the poison isn't much considering once you do get 5 stacks on the mob how much more damage you are doing over time with the 16% increase. Edit to add that just as the above poster said, with SnD up, the time difference it takes to apply 5 stacks on a mob with Imp Poison and without it is even less thusly making Vile poisons that much better.
