Priests and "easier" heroicsFollow

I am a Protection Paladin and relatively new to 70. The forums here, and my guildmates, tell me that I am well enough geared to do a few of the Heroics and probably be fine. My question is, what would be the lowest recommended bonus healing for our Holy Priest who is also new to 70? I think he is around 750 right now, and I have heard that anywhere from 900 to 1250 is really the minimum that should be considered for any heroic.

Is this the case or can he squeak by with 750? I don't really want me, or any of the rest of the party, laying face down on the floor. I want our first Heroic to be as smooth as possible.

He does not get to spend much time on the internet during the day, and in the evening he is playing WoW, so I am asking for him.

I DO know that some of his gemming is just wrong, as he appears to be relying on spell crit for extra healing rather than straight bonus healing, so I believe he needs to re-gem with some purified shadow pearls at the least.

Here is him at the moment:

Oh, and ya, his waist armor sucks and needs an upgrade for sure... what would be the easiest route for an upgrade there?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond!

No, I certainly wouldn't be taking him into heroics, especially not if the tank is new as well. His overall stats are way too low for it imo, wich isn't weird as most of his gear is dps gear. I'd run some normal instances with him, for instance in Shadow Labs drop a lot of good priest healing pieces.

About replacing the belt, I think your best bet is Belt of the Long Road. You can either have a tailor make it or just get it off the AH. It's a good belt he won't be replacing for a long while.

Thanks!

That confirmed my idea that he needs to gear up. He levelled as Shadow and still has some shadow tendencies. Could you give me some baseling stats that would enable him to be ready for heroics? I don't need a full rundown, but health, mp5, +healing, int, and spirit would certainly be good indicators.

I'm going to attempt to give you some rough ideas of stats, but depending on how good a healer he is will perhaps alter some of these, I also have to keep in mind you're a new 70 tank as well.

Mana : 8k
+Healing: 1000+ (pref 1200+)
Health: 6k with fortitude more if he can without gimping other stats
Mp5: While casting 100, though 120+ is easily achievable.

Spirit will add to Mp5 and +healing so I won't set a minimum as it'll depend on how his other stats look, but more is always good.

He needs to sort out his talents too. He has several for soloing (Imp SWP, Spirit Tap) which aren't going to serve him while healing, he doesn't have anything but 2 points in Disc, Imp PW:F would be nice, silent resolve etc etc. There are a couple of suggested builds in the sticky guides. He should absolutely be picking up Meditation from the Disc tree (30% mana regen while casting). He currently has 15 Mp5 while casting, that is nowhere near enough.

He can pick up The Essence Focuser from AH for not much gold which will improve his healing by around 90. He should stop gemming spell haste, or other gems and focus on +healing til he's got to where he needs to be.

Spell critical is hardly something a priest of his level should be worrying about, his +healing, mana and Mp5 should be priorities. There's a gear guide I wrote further down the page which should give you some good starting ideas.

By getting the essence focuser thats an additional +84 heals.
Try to get the +81 heals enchant on weapon, its a little expensive but easy to obtain if you have time to farm the mats. This weapon will easily last you for a while unless you are up for farming the PVP gavel (which alone considering the upgrade will put you over 1000+heals). If it was me, and I was attempting to get there as quick as possible, i would go pvp for the Merciless Gladiator's Salvation as it will last you for a very very long time.

Since you have some really nice healing legs it wouldnt be a bad thing to drop some cash/farm for Silver Spellthread or Golden Spellthread if you have the money. The silver adds +46 heals and golden 66.

With the focuser, healing chant, and silver spellthread it brings you up to 959+heals. Not including talents right? Sorry I am still learning on the healing priest. But gear, I can certainly help you on. :)

If you manage to upgrade a few of those greens it will easily put you into 1000+heals. Let me just start by saying, since it is easy for you to get there, heroics are tough - 1000+heals is very low to be starting heroics, but if your group takes their time moving slowly through them, its possible to go without wiping to many times.

This so reminds me of being a fresh 70 with +800 healing.

Great advice above all around. Do have him max out silent resolve (less threat) and meditation (mana regen), and if you are holy, don't use any points in the shadow tree.

As has already been said, he does need to change round his talents. Its absolutely essential to put at least 13 points in discipline to pick up meditation else his mana is just not going to last.

Best thing he can do is run normal instances for upgrades for example robes and shoulders from shad labs (he'll be wanting lower city rep too to pick up the lower city prayer book [lower city revered]), head from arca, gloves from shattered halls.

There are a few choices on weapons, either drops from instances or rep items, even a few staves available as group quest rewards from SMV or netherstorm would be a small upgrade.

couple of upgrades from quests:
Neck - there's a group quest in netherstorm that gives Karja's Medallion (though better are available from instances)
Ring - there's a Black Morass quest that gives keepers ring of piety

There's always so much work to be done when you reach 70, I'm sure he can improve his healing gear vastly in a space of a week or two and be ready to heal you through some heroics. I'd really aim for 1200 +heal though. Good luck!

Thanks again to everyone. My friend does not have a lot of time for research, and has somewhat limited play time during the week, so I am going to have him look at this thread tonight and start working on gearing up. He just got a good upgrade to his headgear from a Steamvaults quest (nice meta-gem!), and I am going to suggest the essence focuser for him with the +healing enchant. This is his first toon ever to 70, so it is going to take him a while to get the Belt of the Long Road (he doesn't even have a flyer yet), but there is a good belt in Magister's Terrace that would do nicely for now.

I think we can get him re-specced properly and up over +1000 heals by the end of this weekend for sure thanks to all of the great info here.

Nice.

Other than me stealing 1 point to put into holy nova, we have exactly the same build. Smiley: nod

Lol!!

You know I have been thinking about doing that myself. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a BG healing and Have seen a rogue vanish, only to wish I could spam Holy Nova Rank 1 to find their sneaky ***** Do you find it a Godsend for this application or do you aply it differently?

I could'nt see the healing of Holy Nova being that usefull unless it just gets an insane boost from +healing?

It's just a fun spell for 1 point. It's useful if I'm running one of my son's alts through SM or another low level dungeon, or if you kill mobs that spawn multiple easily killed bugs, etc.

I wanted to say thank you to all of you for the very helpful posts.

My friend Beansprout has now got his bonus heals up to over +1100, and that is with no enchant on his weapon yet, so +81 healing would get him to 1200. He went with a slightly different build to go just a bit farther into Disc... If you go back to my OP and click on his profile again, you can see it is a BIG improvement over +750 heals and still some Shadow tendencies that he used to have.

BTW... he healed in regular BM last night and they cleared it on the first attempt. That is a pretty healing intensive and time intensive instance, so I think he is definitely on the right track.

Slight aside, but I love holy nova for the worm packs in MgT, I just run in and spam away (possibly stopping in time to save the mage/lock which got agro).

Keep running Honour Hold instances (either SH normal or ramparts/BF heroic if you think you'r ready - personally I find ramparts the easier of those two), if he gets revered he'll be able to buy the Glyph of Renewal and the Ring of Convalescence.
