Read the sticky. The author knows their stuff...

IMO -

Level from about 1-40ish as Ret. (Drop 10 points in Holy to get +INT and no knockback on healing spells - this will help you solo.) During this period you will need 2 weapons and 1 shield at all times IF YOU PLAN ON TANKING. All solo leveling at this point should be with a 2H wep and no shield. All tanking should be done with a 1H wep and a shield. You can easily tank every instance up to BRD if you gear is ok -- you don't have to spec Prot until BRD. Again - this is all my opinion... So - IF you do not plan on tanking - just get a good 2H wep. That's all you'll need. I personally ran with 3 weps and 1 shield. (I had a healer set with 2H, DPS wep, and my gear was all +Tanking)

From 40-70 you can choose your own route. I choose to AOE grind while questing - thus spec'd Prot, got a sword and shield. Most people say Ret is faster. I just have fun watching 10 undead whack away at me and die.

From a more general standpoint - Look for spell damage, Stamina, and INT. Strength is nice, but not how we deal damage. Agility is ok, but you want things to hit you - don't get too much dodge.

I will also say read the FAQ. ;)

However I STRONGLY disagree with almost everything Borsuk told you.

If you're going to level Ret, level Ret and ignore Holy and Prot COMPLETELY until after crusader strike. The plus to Int will be so miniscule it's not worth it and spending ten points so you can heal yourself means you're not doing what Ret is meant to do: DPS. Most of the gear you'll get for ret will be str and ap, your holy damage will be laughable so don't waste the equipment slot on spell damage and int. Get a nice slow 2h weapon (the pally polearm quest will give a sweet piece for many levels) and have at it.

If you want to level Holy spend points on Holy. Stock up on plus healing and int gear and find some buddies to quest with, you'll need them early on. Sword and shield here though don't discount some of the offhand healy items in a group with a good tank.

If you want to tank, go prot. Sword and shield, stam and def are your friend and again, find some buddies to level with.

I do agree that post 40 pallies change a lot, but that's another post. :P

Seconded Moultdog. He is fully correct.

Apart of that, there is one thing to be mentioned (Borsuk did so too, but with a capital IF): always carry a one handed and a shield with you. You never know when the need to tank temporarily arises.

To complement Moultdog: the holy points to get 70% noninterrupt is indeed not necessary because you can always bubble and heal/bandage without interruption. Lay on hands in utter trouble. And later on Repentance/heal/bandage if needed.

Focus on 1. str and 2. sta with 3. agi as a close third. Neglect spi at all (utterly worthless) and any int that comes with str/sta/agi gear is an extra, not a needed stat.

1. Levelling as Ret: MAYBE take 5 points in holy (after you have enough points in Ret to get Crusader strike) but use them for DIVINE STRENGTH, not divine int. Also, go far enough into Prot to get 3 points in precision (again after you get CS) Also, read CapJack's and ToolofJesus's stickies and follow them for the most part. (I find CapJack's solo levelling build weird, I prefer to fill out the ret tree to get CS while ignoring some of the useless talents, but other than that, his sticky is AWESOME and so is the one by ToolofJesus.) Do use a big slow 2-hander for questing and have a sword and board available for tanking. Tanking as Ret is fun and works fine through ZF and Mara or so. STRENGTH, STAM, and AGI are your friend. Being dumb as a box of rocks and having no spirit is just fine. Learn to make band-aids.

2. Levelling as Prot: Get 3 points into imp Righteous Fury ASAP. Being able to use Blessing of Kings and Improved Righeous Fury at something like level 26 makes you invincible for tanking Gnomer, Scarlet Monastery, etc. If you go this route, just go straight Prot and do a lot of dungeons, then start adding Ret talents such as benediction, deflection, and improved judgement AFTER you get avenger's shield. Do quests in groups of at least 2 (you and a priest) or ideally 3 (you, a priest, and ranged dps). Burn everything down in huge clumps. Read CapJack's and Losie's Stickies. STAM, STAM, and STAM are your friend.

3. Levelling as Holy: WHY? ... this would not be the best way to go for levelling. If you get interested in Holy later and can do it, read CapJack's and YJMark's Stickies.

Agreed. You also have Hammer of Justice which gives you enough time for a heavy heal.

It's really possible to tank anything spec'ed ret until late in the game, like 69+. Hell, I tanked Sethekk at 68 with little issues as a ret with tanking gear.

For now, solo, stick with Ret and a big 2H weapon. Coupled with Blessing of Wisdom, you are a killing machine.
