Spirit vs Mp5 gemsFollow

#1 Aug 19 2008 at 3:46 AM Rating: Decent
Hello, I've been lurking on these forums quite some time now, both in the Hunter and Priest forums and I finally decided to make a post myself, so here it goes :

My priest recently hit 70 and I'm busy gearing him up for 25 mans like Serpentshrine Caverns and Tempest Keep. I've collected some Karazhan gear and such but I was doubting what gems I should use in Blue coloured sockets.

My first thought was a Royal Nightseye (9 healing 2mp5) but now that I've been doing some research I'm thinking more and more about replacing those with 9 healing 4 spirit gems. Or should I even go for full Spirit gems?

Here is my armoury : http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Chromaggus&n=Exorga

So in short : What is the balance between mp5 and Spirit gems?

My thanks in advance.

The Purified Shadow Pearls (+9 healing/+4 spi) works out to be better over all. Not only do they give a comparable amount of MP/5 now, but that extra 4 spirit with your 5/5 Spiritual Guidance actually makes the gem equal to +10 healing. Greater Heal gets an extra 1.2 bonus healing on top of that due to your 3/5 Empowered Healing. Doesn't sound like a lot, but every little bit helps. And that's just one. Combine 7 or 8 of those across your gear and you're looking at a significant difference.

Also, keep in mind that you should be working +healing, +spirit or +stamina in your sockets primarily. For priests, straight spirit is better than mp/5 since they rearranged the way Spirit based regen works in 2.4.

Matching socket colors is a bit iffy - red and blue sockets are easy - the purified shadow pearls (and the epic version of same) matches both colors. Yellow sockets ... become a little tricky. You should use the shadow pearls here, too unless the socket bonus is spectacular (like more spirit). Matching a yellow for a trifling amount of MP/5? Not worth it, imo. Yellow gem's don't do much for us. I mean, what are you going to put there, Spell Hit Rating gems? Smiley: grin

Without knowing your overall gear and needs, it's hard to make specific recommendations.

In general, spirit is more valuable to a priest than MP5. Royal Nightseye are a special case, being slightly overbudgeted, but if I have a blue socket I'm still more likely to put in a Purified Shadow Pearl.

Most PVE priests I know don't gem for mana regeneration; they gem for +healing. With the boost to Meditation and the plentiful spirit on our unmodified gear, we rarely run out of mana these days. If you're running low on long boss fights, you can either make more use of downranking and cancel-casting to conserve, or you can pretend you're a shadow priest and chain-chug mana potions. Or both.

Thanks for the information, I have now switched my Royal Nighteyes into Purified Shadow Pearls and I notice a significant boost !

I'm using 11 healing 4 spell crit gems in yellows sockets, I believe those are Heroic Epic gems, I've read that spellcrit benefits Circle of Healing by a large margin, or am I completely wrong about this?

While stacking spell crit can backfire (usually is in place of spirit/stam), having enough to hit 12 - 15% crit is good. The way it works with CoH makes CoH that much more desireable. Each target healed by CoH is treated as a seperate heal that can crit. So, for 5 targets that's 5 chances to crit. And 5 chances to proc trinkets/abilities that trigger on spell crits. Clearcasting spam of Coh can be rather interesting.
