I recently decided to level up my little lock, and I've been haunting your forums for a couple of weeks now. After reading the sticky about the different playstyles, I choose the Affliction dot-fear type.

So far I really enjoy it. I started leveling as demo, pretty much using my VW like a hunter pet. But after leveling two hunters to 70, I really wanted a new playstyle. So now I get to max distance from a mob, load it up with dots and cast fear. Assuming no resists, the fear usually lands right after the mob reaches me, triggering my defensive imp. I then tap and drain to full, rinse, and repeat.

There are two things I'm still struggling with though. First, I read a couple of times that the succy will do better damage than the imp, but it's unnerving to have her chasing a feared mob all over the map. The imp can stay close to me while firing. Is it okay for her to roam about? I noticed that sometimes feared mobs don't trigger the adds they get close to, and I worried that she would.

Secondly, I had hoped to get to the "God of Death Mode" the sticky referenced. I know my shadow damage is still pretty low, but when I fight green mobs, one stack of dots generally finishes them off. The catch is that if I'm running through a pack, most of the time they will evade out before they either catch me or die. Will this cease to be an issue when I get my shadow damage up a bit higher?

Oh, one other thing. When I need to tap and drain, or get some soul shards, the feared mob will nearly always run out of range before the drain completes. Should I chase them for a while after the initial fear so I will be able to complete the spell?

Thanks all :)

Very well stated post; I feel like I understand affliction a little better (at least one playstyle) and as a Lev 30 Demon Lock who is considering re-speccing Aff pretty soon I'd like to just chime in that I'm interested in the answers.

Good Luck!

For affliction imp is better,no doubt, mana battery and hp buff.Besides that if you use succy you should be drain tanking not drain hunting, meaning you hold aggro and succy is there just to do additional dps.

If they are different "class" of mob they won't pull adds (humanoids will only pull humanoids, beasts will pull beasts etc ...)

Yea,this sometimes happens, try to move closer to mob while feared to get into fear "radius".

And one more thing about your build ,all good, except soul siphon is really nice talent which should not get skipped! imo drop points from imp corruption (as it's worth only once you get decent amount of spell damage)

It's much easier to keep the imp out during a Fear rotation. While the Succy might do more damage it will be canceled out by the fact that most of her time is spent chasing the mob. For a Fear lock, keep your imp out if you want pet damage. While grinding to 70 you can even throw 3 points into Improved Imp if you want (though Once you get UA it's not really needed). I keep my pets on passive at the moment so I can just use them as a mana battery. It's pretty rare that a mob will survive past the first round of DoTs.

I haven't had this happen too often. It's pretty rare that the mob will run so far out during a fear that it resets. Though increasing your Shadow Damage will only help the situation. The more DPS the less time it has to run before dieing.

This used to frustrate the crap out of me when I started the Fear->DoT playstyle. Once I am ready to drain I usually chase after the mob for a few feet before starting it (or wait for it to stop running for the first time). Now and then it will still run out of range but not nearly as often.

Drain tanking with imp out is by far the best way to go. Leave the imp phased, DoT it up, drain life while Dark Pacting as your main source of mana. Life Tap occasionally. Looking at your spec, you can probably DoT up about 3 mobs then Howl of Terror them off you (I usually don't make it to 3, the first one dies when I get the 3rd DoT'd up). Also pick up Soul Siphon and put a put into Demonic Embrace. Curse of Exhaustion really is just a PvP thing, I'd drop it. Grab UA at 50 and you're good to go with 41, then go imp SB, Bane, Devestation, Intensity then Destructive Reach with Shadowburn at 70. 41/0/20
