Hi All. I healed my first instance this week, Hellfire Ramparts. Not wanting to ***** up, I respeced to Holy, bought some +healing greens off the AH and had a blast. We managed to down the last boss even though I fell off the bridge and had to make the long run back from the entrance. We survived thanks to a quick thinking ret pally who off-healed until I got back.

Anyway, I'm level 61, and to get to 70 as quickly as possible I've respeced back to shadow. My question is whether I can still effectively heal "at-level" instances? I don't want to hold the group back, but I can't afford to respec every time I run an instance.

Short answer: Yes you can still heal at level instances at this level, it will be harder work, but as has been said on this forum many times learning to heal while you're shadow will probably make you a better healer when you do go holy.

Slightly different answer: If you want to level and heal rather than go shadow you could consider going deeper into disc than you otherwise would, while still picking up some holy talents, it's a different way of playing it and although not quite as efficient as shadow will be easier to level than holy. I have a tankadin as well as a holy priest and personally I'd prefer a holy/disc priest healing me post 60 especially in pugs where I don't know how good a healer the guy is.

Perhaps they best way to find out is find some understanding people and run Ramparts again as shadow and see if you're able to keep everyone up when you should. Whichever spec you choose be it more shadow focussed or not at the very least pick up Healing Focus, Improved Renew and Divine Fury as and when your talent points will allow it and you should find healing instances fine, especially if you keep a set of healing gear with you.

I leveled Shadow up until about 67, but I had no problem healing in Outlands instances. That being said, I was collecting the best healing gear as I went because I knew I was eventually going Holy anyway. So in reality, I probably gimped my DPS by having healing gear, but I still felt that it was far easier to solo as Shadow. The best part of healing as a spriest is when the instance is done and they're like, "hey, nice healing" you can pop into shadow form, bow and say thanks. :)

I can vouch for this, I levelled disc all the time in Outland and I found it much more effective to solo than I thought it would be, as I had almost zero downtime. I was also able to heal instances with relative ease.

Actually I'd like to try that - I'll go and look at some builds, and if anyone could a decent build I'd appreciate it.

Gratz on your first heal!!

As far as lvling, I went holy at 60 and haven't looked back. I have changed my holy build up since I hit 68, but eh.
I personally don't like Zanger. I actually dreaded going there and wanted to find a way around it so that was the main reason I specd holy (and it was what I was going to do at 70 anyway). All I did was instances up to lvl 66, and WOW!! I got the best blues to heal, I never hit a quest and always had a group within 5 min of logging on to run (seems to be a shortage on healers on Bolderfist). Everyone's looking for a healer.

I went with this build till 68 and was impressed. Never had a problem healing, even a so-so group through Black Morass, and when I decided to go and start questing again I was impressed at how well a holy priest did solo. No down time, in a fix? shield, renew, and start smiting again. The other upside I'm finding as I get close to 70 (almost half way now) is that all these quests that I left behind are going to just be easy money and rep. And questing in Blade's Edge Mts is pretty easy as a lvl 69 working against lvl 63-64 mobs.

I loved shadow. Still collecting gear for it (though I haven't found a reason to go back yet). But lvling holy the way I did was easy. Oh yeah, and as an enchanter, running instances was choice. So many blues and greens to DE.

GL.

I think the build I used was something like this. Especially the combination of Improved PW:S and Reflective shield works really well while solo'ing.

this was the build i started out at 60 when i hit outlands: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVTGzh0tbZfxt0Mbc

and this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVTGzh0tbxZfxt0cbqz

was when i hit 70. tho you want be able to use that 70 spec for raiding.
it helped me to solo big time and to heal decently in the same lvled instances. you best bet would just to poke around in the disc side and see how you'd enjoy your talents spent.

ps. not to sure if i've done the link right

I stuck to shadow up to 70 with the intention to respec Holy. I was worried I'd have a hard time lvling and shadow was the best way for this. Once I hit 70 I then thought it would be difficult to grind the necessary rep needed for lots of rewards in OL, but I took a leap of faith, respeccd Holy 19/42/0 for CoH, crafted my Primal mooncloth set and its just been a blast. soloing as holy at 70 for rep etc isnt at all that bad, a bit slower granted but not an issue.

Just like tanking, you can fill the role with an off-spec until arounf 67 or 68. Obviously with a super geared group, going further off-spec is possible. But for the vast majority of equally geared PUG's, anything TK, SH, SL, BM, and definitely MgT are best served by spec'ing appropriately.

And for the love of Wow, tell people you are spec'ed differently before the run. It helps them focus a bit when they know the healer is not able to save their butts by tossing around extra heals.

This is exactly how I have leveled through Outlands. With a filled out Shadow tree (41 or 42 points), and 10 points in Holy, I have been healing instances 1 or 2 levels below my level without many problems at all.
My healing set consists of 5 or 6 pieces of gear to swap out.

Realistically, we ARE priests, we will be asked to heal in groups. On my server we don't seem to be especially short of healers (there are stories of priests being messaged constantly out of the blue. I don't seem to get that.) but if you stick to the 'I'm DPS only' line, you are really gimping your ability to form a decent group to finish an instance. I see it as wasting 15 minutes sending messages in LFG for a healer, when we could have already started earning that valuable XP.

Ever since I rolled a priest "Bloodhealz" i have been getting random messages no matter where i am at "hey, do you wanna heal Mara?" out of the blue, it's funny how that works, kinda feel like i'm being stalked when that happens :-P
