Noob question regarding a Mage's role in BMFollow

I have a green (in terms of instance experience) level 70 Mage. I spec'd him Fire, and levelled him as such with great success (I never died questing in outlands), cos I like to burn stuff ;-) ... and have full spellfire / spellstrike set together with some decent complimentary quest and crafted blues. He's ok.

One thing I REALLY need to do, however, is get into BM (there's a nice staff and shoulders there, as well as the enchanter specific recipes from being honored with the keepers).

My main problem is confidence - I haven't instanced much, and when I have, I've done ok - I even topped the damage for a heroic SP run .. twice. However, that's in a situation where my job is simple, sheep and nuke (why I love being a mage). My confidence in my abilities though don't stretch far enough to knowing what to do in BM .. everyone says the mage's job in BM is add control, and they're the best at it - but how can I do that as a fire mage.

I can easily see how frost would help for add control - it's self explanatory .. you slow them down, and when they come for you, you Blizz them into the ground. My fire spells are for the most part single target, and my AOE spells have burst capabilities at best.

So here I am - supposedly the best for the job - and no idea what would be involved for that job. I've run BM a few times on my DPS (fury) warrior - and there my job was also simple .. slice the rift keepers up till they die, so I don't even have any idea of what the situation is with the adds .. I normally left that to my 'lock buddy.

Thanks for the patience and understanding, you guys have helped in the past, and I'm sure you'll help this time ;-)

OK, here's how you do it (it's really easy, don't worry):

1) Stay by Medivh the entire time - DPS the bosses if you want and use the cdrgaons to kill adds by medivh. You should be fine just staying there the entire time, though. Make a ton of food and water.

2) You see an add, open on it with a fireball, another fireball and then a scorch fireblast or just a scorch if that'll end it. If the mob is the caster that casts arcane bolts that speed up after each cast, you have to CS the bolt (the first is the slowest and thus the easiest to CS - I suggest making a /stopcasting /cast counterspell macro). After the mob is dead, rec up.

3) On triple whelp adds, use froistnova to root and ae/blastwave them down. You get different types of adds later on, but they're all just fairly safe melee/casters. CS Shadowbolts if they cast them at you.

That's it. It's really easy. I did it in my pre tBC raiding gear, and it gets much easier with spellfire and such. Be confident!

I tended to stay on the bosses while we had a hunter do adds, was a lot easier.

See Adds:

If Adds = Whelps:
Frost Nova, Flamestrike, BW, DB(if necessary).

Else
Target add
Pretend add is mob in solo.

If all adds are dead, hit the big guy.

It's really that easy.

Run Mage Armor(I've found it helps), be between Medivh and the portal. If your two other DPS are doing their jobs, you should get no more than one wave of whelps per portal most of the time.

This is how I did it. Crappy gear at the time. Ran it alot at level 68. Kill them quick, stay close to the island. This way, you drop combat after each wave, you can eat/drink. I even did the same thing with making tons of food/water. I typically had 80 of each, this was before mana biscuits.

The most annoying ones I remember were the arcane casting mobs. Just remember to counterspell them.

Thanks guys ... I guess I should just relax and rely on my abilities ... it all sounds simple enough.

I do this a lot ... convince myself that I can't do something, then find out how wrong I was when I try it (ie, it CAN be done, and I CAN do it, and very well too ;->)

I love taking care of the adds in BM on my mage.

What I really found useful and always requested from my party is that they let all adds untouched, let them all unharmed come to me. That way I was able to sit and drink/eat whenever I needed after a kill, if I needed it. I just felt more secure if I could be as closest to full mana and HP as I could at all times.

I do the same on my newer toons. I spend waaaaay too much time gearing them for heroics and kara, when I've actually been ready for months.

It's been a while and I've never done it these ways, but can't a hunter Arcane Shot it off and a priest dispel it?

Believe priest can dispel and I've seen a shaman purge it (my own hasn't been in there yet).
