Okay well I ran slabs a couple of weeks back and microsoft decided that right at the first boss to shut my system down to apply updates. When I got back in party was gone so I returned to shatt. During that party a friend of mine who came out to tank commented on my talent build saying that I should go SV because the dungeons are extremely rough and CC'ing is absolutely important.

Fast forward to about 1 hour ago...

I joined up on a group to run heroic ramps. Now before everyone starts commenting about gear here. I know I have some holes in my gear, but even the tank said that the gear was fine for the ramps. I am at an a dead-end on normal parties, but I still need gear for the hunter. Continuing with the story though, we enter and the healer was standing too close to the bridge and the wandering pat picked up on him. Second attempt I accidentally kicked my wireless keyboard adapter and well it decided to keep pressing keys. Third attempt, rouge goes in for the sap and they all aggro'd. Finally attempt, I finally get a trap set for my target, but it got resisted and we wipe again.

I was drawn to the hunter for its ability to dish out damage. I left Paladin because I didn't want to be in the support role of a party (i.e. healing and CC)... I think I would feel much better if I could get a party and actually complete a dungeon because this is just getting downright stupid. If anyone is Alliance and on nazgrel and has some free time look me up. I am almost always on at night.

Every Windows user should tweak the settings for their automatic updates. Go to Control Panel, click on Automatic Updates, and choose the option "Notify me, but do not automatically download or install them."

You will never have be bothered by Windows ever again to restart your computer in the middle of a raid. Just make sure that at the end of the night you check to see if there are updates, and let it do its thing.

Wait I'm confused do you want hunter advise or do you just want some peeps to play with?
Sadly I'm not on your server so I can't help you directly by playing with you, but am more than happy to provide any hunter tips.

Oh and none of those wipes was your fault. You had 3 people do some otherwise avoidable things, and that caused a wipe. A trap resist is not your fault, sometimes you just get unlucky.

I am just venting off.. When my wireless adapter got out of range the computer started simulating key presses which caused me to fire into the group. As for windows issues, I do have the auto-updates set at a time when I am not on. For some unknown reason it still likes to perform updates when I am in WoW.

I calmed down a bit, been working on a hunter's guide for my guild site and listening to the new metallica channel on XM :)

just to add my 2 cents worth. Many more talented people when it comes to the hunter class would hopefully agree with me that respecing to SV for heroics is a nice gesture, but in no ways necessary.

I would reccomend hitting heroics in zangamarsh, like slave pens and the other early 60's that I can't remember for some reason. I've had some good luck in those and as far as heroics go they are a little easier both on getting you used to playing heroics as well as easy on the bank account when it comes to repair bills

haha speaking of... I think blizz should give us engineers a bonus from the 110G... I dropped one out after our 4th attempt just outside the dungeon and I had people from both sides using it to repair or get those last minute items.

I am probably going to re-spec myself to more of a CC type build simply because I want to run in dungeons and earn more that 200g a night (dailies). I really kick myself in the rear because this is what I should have been doing when I first hit 70 and everyone was running normal dungeons. Anyways though, no sense of holding on to the past, it doesn't get me into the future lol.

If you want to do dailies easily don't respec survival. I just went back BM tonight and I never realized just how painful it was to do as surv.

Everything just dies faster, stays on your pet longer (though still not long enough :\) , and is just downright easier to kill as BM.

You can do it a survival, just don't expect it to speed up the process.

good idea... I am still waiting for my new memory, so until then I am just going to stick out the dailies... When I hit exhalted can I continue to do them or no? (God I hope I can lol... best source of money so far)

SV has its perks, but I'm only still that because I'd be 46 hit rating short as BM. I can't find upgrades with hit rating, so I'll be the EW guy.

Most of the time, you won't be picking the reduced cooldown, or readiness, unless you're speccing just for those things. 10% lower resist, lasts 6 seconds longer.. not much of a buff really. In fact, I'm not even specced for the lower resist anymore because I never need to trap outside bad pugs.

Detterence and Counter Attack, though.. If the trap fails, the mob can't hit me. Then he can't move.

From the description of the run, it sounds like the healer and tank were pretty badly geared as well. I know that with my resto shammy, as long as a tank can hold agro, we could clear any trash mobs in any heroic easily. Yesterday actually ran heroic shattered halls and during the gauntlet part I died. After getting a quick battle rez I realized all of my gear except my MH and shield broke. We still cleared the entire place with me EASILY healing with only 826 +heals with well over enough time left to clear the timed event. The tank was in Kara equivalent gear, 2 dps about the same, and 1 pretty crappy geared.

Point of the story, heroic ramps first pull should be easy cake for any semi geared healer and tank even with a few mishaps. I would suggest trying to find a good tank and good healer willing to run with you a lot(obviously it wont be that easy but still try to make sure you remember tanks and healers who are good and bad).

As for survival, do you raid? Most survival specs are only for expose weakness and leave out almost all of the advanced trapping abilities. But if you do decide to spec into a cc type survival build, it really doesn't help THAT much. Yes less resists and an "Oh sh*t" button but you lack a lot of dps and if your group is any good that extra trap really shouldn't make a difference (most of the time you should be able to get off two traps pretty easily).

Random thought, I think that since Skinners can skin corpses, Herbalists can herb dead plant monsters. I think engineers should be able to salvage mechanical corpses.

This quote got me thinking about that. It only seems fair. Ok I am done.

well we can salvage certain mechanical devices, but the repair bots are not one of them... I am gonna put that as a suggestion on the oboards after dinner.

It's more likely that engineers would be allowed to zapthrottle the corpses of elementals.

Air, water, shadow, and mana elementals anyway.

You might want to think about rerolling to tank then. A big part of the hunters job is to CC, and our CC is a bit more complex than the rest.

It's more complex because when your traps are resisted there are so many things you can do to tie the mob down while to give the party time to recover. A mage, when sheep is broken or resisted, simply needs to recast. A rogue, when their sap wears off or is broken, maybe toss a blind if it's heading for the healer. But a hunter, oh the fun. If your trap is resisted, you have consussive shot, wing clip, plus the tree specific CCs(intimidate, wyvern). All these things given to us so that we can keep the mob at bay, buying the group time.

In a raid you will mostly just be pewpewing, but in a 5 man heroic, you will have to CC, a lot seeing as our traps aren't as limited as the other forms of CC(humanoids for sap and sheep, beasts for sheep, demons and elementals for banish).

I have been doing my traps and getting better at it. So far no one has complained or asked me to respec for better traps. Heck I was trapping in Kara with 0 resist until Moroes, that ahole kept running over my traps while I was trying to CC my assignment. Literally, I drop the trap, get the aggro on my assignment, and Moroes runs right over my trap following someone. I think he was doing it intentionally lol. Point is though the traps are working just fine and I have had a few really good runs. Right now what is limiting me is the fact I can't do any heroic CoT's or Auch (working on that now). It's a bit hard getting a party to do the durnholde quests, but I am going to try again on the weekend.

When I trap in 'confined' quarters (can't pull off to the side, etc.) I generally know I'll have to take a hit on it. I find a corner or someplace behind the party, pull my target when the tank pulls theirs, and change target. My pull will come right up to me and I drop the trap right on them. It works but it's certainly NOT optimal. I generally take a hit and hang around them, hoping our healer(s) will find a moment to toss a heal on me. They are usually aware of the issue and I normally get a heal right off the bat.

Issues with this kind of trapping are significant. Your trap CD is never ready to retrap so you can't chain trap. They often come after you (I try to put as much aggro on them as possible before they get to me) and you can get hit again if the group isn't ready to focus on them.

My group knows when I do this and they usually make my target a priority since they know I can't kite them anyplace and they don't want the target on the healers. I've died waiting for them to down two primary targets, after all, I'm not a tank! Sometimes they'll make mine the secondary target and let the OT handle their target a while longer. I tell them I prefer this, let me trap the secondary target and let the OT take on the #3 priority target. It usually keeps #2 on ice long enough for us to kill #1.

If we have a second hunter the two of us can keep a mob on ice for a while so it's rarely an issue then.

If anyone has any better ideas for confined trapping, I'm all ears! ^_^

Both very cool ideas. The zapthrottle would have to return mostly junk with the random mote though or it would be overpowered a bit.

One possibility would be to respec MM/SV, so you get the points in the SV tree into Entrapment and Clever Traps and get some added utility in the MM tree.

I know popular opinion is to go BM, but MM/SV has its advantages if you're primarily running 5-mans. In addition to the trap enhancements in the SV tree, the MM tree has a couple talents that can be very beneficial in 5-man instances. Silencing Shot is great for pulling casters to trap. Scatter Shot helps a lot in controlling mobs that resist your traps, giving you extra time to get the mob re-trapped.

When you get into raiding, then the utility of MM/SV spec diminishes a lot; you won't be trapping much and silencing shot isn't used much, if at all. BM becomes the desired spec because of the sustained higher damage you're contributing. But, in the shorter fights in 5-mans the lower dps of MM/SV isn't that big of a deal, and the added utility can be very helpful.

So, if you're planning on primarily running 5-mans, consider switching to a MM/SV build for the added utility and improved trap performance. Just something to consider.

ps. Get those weapons enchanted for Agility and you'll pick up a good chunk of crit and RAP.

I am working on that. The mats are outrageous right now, so I am working with an enchanter to get them gathered up.
