Obliterate is higher damage and higher threat to a single target whereas Howling Blast is "superior" for multi-mob tanking because it hits multiple targets.

Last I read Howling Blast was doing more damage to a single target than Obliterate. Then again last I read HB was due for a major nerf, and that was a few days ago.

I was thinking something like this. As above, it's ignoring (Imp) Icy Talons for presumption of a Shaman, since it's two points for them in a tree that's relatively free versus six points for DKs in a tree that's scrambling for points. Then 18 in Blood for Spell Deflection while still making room for both Acclimation and Guile of Gorefiend.

Nerfs to HB or buffs to Obliterate might make Annihilation compulsory, which I can only imagine would mean taking points from Frigid Dreadplate.

I'm not in beta and havent really been up to date on DKs as much as I would like to be. I noticed that all the builds linked in this thread take 2H Weap Spec.
I had assumed that it would be more beneficial to DW 2 tank weapons. What's the reason behind the 2H weapons? Just curious as I will most likely be rolling a DK once Wottle drops and I'd like to not be an uninformed noob. =P
Thanks in advance for reply!

The problem with 2 1Handers arises in 2 areas. One, damage comparison. And two, getting parried.

On damage comparison, a lot of the DK's ******* is based around attacks that take the base damage of your MH weapon and amplifying it in some manner. How this works for DW is that it will take the base dmg of your 1 hander in the MH slot, where as with a 2Hander, it will go by the 2H weapon's base damage. I don't know if Blizzard is going to be changing some things so that DW is viable, but currently you won't be doing as much dmg as DPS or threat as a tank if you have 2 1handers.

On getting parried, whenever you fight a boss or any enemy that wields a weapon, they have a chance to parry you with every attack you throw at them. So if you have 2 weapons, you are probably swinging at the guy twice as many times with white damage than you would if you had a 2handed weapon, thus, doubling your chances to get parried. Now, if parries were just straight avoidance like dodge, this wouldn't be an issue. But the way parry works is if someone is parried by an enemy, the enemy's next swing comes 40% faster. This can create large issues with bosses.

If DW is going to be viable for tanking, Blizzard is going to need to make changes so that these 2 restrictions don't hinder the DK.

I'm pretty sure there was a bluepost about 1H useage being sort of a secondary ability, probably so DKs could benefit from the more prevalent 1H weapon rewards and drops in Outland without having to wait 2/3 levels for a new solid 2H every time.

None of the abilities scale particularly well with a DW setup unless they change the Strikes to use 'both weapons', the 'Nerves of Cold Steel' thingy is just a toy talent for people who (for whatever reason) really want to roll a DWing Death Knight. It'd be unreasonable to allow them to equip a 1H (which a 'Knight' certainly could...) but nothing at all (except Offhands but... lol) in the other hand. What is he meant to say, "Lich King wont let me use Shields"?

You can be pretty well assured DKs won't be tanking with DW unless major changes are made, and frankly I don't want those changes to happen. Tanking with a bloody great sword is a wonderful idea, and ought to be encouraged.

Ah, thank you both.
I hadnt even thought of being parried, though I think you could get past that what with expertise, and that expertise food buff would make things easier too but I could see how threat would be an issue.

While expertise would negate parry chances, stacking this stat on top of Stam, STR, avoidance and AP would be quite a chore and a little irresponsible with how hard it looks like it will be to get a respectable health pool and avoidance table compared to the other tanks.

I don't see a problem with Blizz letting 1handers be used while tanking, as long as they fix the problems mentioned above. I think I'd probably stick with a 2hander, though, it feels right to me.
