Raid DPS as protection?Follow

#1 Aug 14 2008 at 5:29 AM Rating: Decent
I am looking for information about raid DPS as protection warrior. Including weapon type choices, gear/gem/enchant choices and rotations. Is there any calculator that I can use? One that would handle the lack of typical offensive talents. Any guides that would cover such a topic?

Well depends...
Are you MT or OT?
None of the above? then why protection?
Thing that you should really focus on is + hit, because when you have a higher hit rating, you won't miss ergo more dps.
You should have a few sets of gear even as a prot warrior with some +stength/+AP/+agi and some trinkets...
So equip those in stead of the def-gear
Really tell you which weapons is a tough one for me as I don't remember weapons names...
Hope this helps

As prot you simply will never do good dps, but you can help yourself to not totally suck.

Get yourself either some high dps 1 handers, or a high dps 2 hander from the BG's or arena, pick up some pvp plate, gem it for +hit (forget AP until you get to the cap). Get some gear that has +expertise on it for your rings and neck, and use a mod like closet gnome to flip to your dps mode when it matters. Pop to 'zerk stance and do what you can.

Never worry about dps when you are in 'tank' mode. You simply won't do any compared to the rest of the raid. I sometimes out dps the healers . . .

Hmm, thanks for answering, but I find it all still too vague.
Maybe I should concentrate on one aspect first -
What type of weapons would you use: dual wielding or 2H? What kind of rotations in each case?
(mind you I have only HS, slam, WW and devastate)
And what speed weapons if DW?

I've done 1900 DPS as Prot Spec (on Teron Gorefiend), which put me at 1st in an admittedly somewhat slacking Sunwell guild doing a BT farming run.

Get good DPS gear ('good' being somewhat generic - higher emphasis on STR than other sets, otherwise it's pretty similar to Fury) and spam Devastate, Whirlwind whenever it's up and Heroic Strike to dump rage.

EDIT: Slow MH, offhand speed doesn't much matter but slower is better than faster.

In addendum to rp, watch your threat. Get salv if you can.

I've put out some respectable dps on fights where the MT/OT isn't needed, check it out on shad of aran.

Yay for 1900dps! I am going DW then. I have Fool's Bane banked just for such a case. And I guess my current Defender will serve as offhand for the time being.

For stat comparison and gear selection I am being told the EJ Grim's warrior DPS calculator should be able to handle protection specs, so I am going to try that.

620dps on Aran today. Doing interrupts and with some green items still. Actually 3rd on DPS, what a lousy bunch, hehe. But it is working.
For some reason the DPS spreadsheet recommends +hit much stronger than any other stat. I am at 150 at the moment. I am not sure about this, but if that's true I will need to gem +hit?

People underestimate how cheap devistate is for the damage it does when you're in dps gear.

very true, devastate spam while DW can be very nice for DPS.

i had a very nicely dps geared tank for aran, who was 4th on dps against aran, miles below our good dps but shaming the medicore ones.

on average my warrior, while tanking is getting 350-400 dps, this is in a normal instance with maybe just BoM and/or MotW.

Yeah if your talking about fights like Shade of Aran where their are no tanks..

Then yeah DPSing as prot is awesome - I avg. around 960-1000DPS on my prot warrior.

Main hand right now is the Breeching Coment - from MGT and the Offhand is the Left Fist of Brutality (Badge gear)
My other gear is all DPS gear from random spots I have picked it up at.. Either Arena's or Heroics.

I dont normally tend to roll on DPS peices during raids unless theirs no other plate wearers their.

But fury(DW) is really the way to go, when Grinding on the Isle, or during them boss fights where no tank is really needed.
