If someone could be nice enough to give advice to a newbFollow

#1 Aug 13 2008 at 12:17 PM Rating: Default
So yes I am new, and I have been reading through alot of the posts but theres a few things im oblivious to.

This is my first charecter I picked a warlock. Now from my past game we did not have DoT, so I had used the destruction spell the most.
I am only level 11 and havnt put any skillpoints in.

I have seen that people never use destruction as a pathway for a warlock.

Noone was helping ig which i'm a newb and understand.

So I rerolled and talked to someone telling me to go whatever I would have most fun with. And whatever I used most until level 10 is what I should keep.

Now would I completly ruin my char if I went destruction?

Or should I do aff and if i do, does someone have a link to a treebuild?

Also any other information would be greatly appreciated ways you have taken that is better for higher levels and such.

Or should I just go with destruction because I use it most?

Thanks.

Whoever told you to stick to what you were using until level 10 was in idiot. The game changes a lot and more styles appear as you level and gain talents and spells.(you gain drain life at level 14, so WTF?)
Affliction is indeed considered the fastest and safest way to level to 50.
If you say you enjoy Shadowbolds, then I would recomend to try a mage too.
Choose whatever you like, this is a game, after all.

Edit: some spelling

It's a game yes, but for me to completley enjoy what i'm doing I like to be the best.. If that makes any sense lol. I just use it because its the easiest to kill with ( I barley know anything about wow) Also there is really no good aff in the early levels. My friend told me just to rerole something like a hunter or warrior until I get the hang of it more but I want my lock. :)

I don't remember for sure how I was at 10-14 but I think it is still a good ideea to dot the target (not only ShadowBlts).
If you say you enjoy being good, then I suggest you to put your first talent points in Improved Corruption (first tier in the affliction tree). This will make it instant, thus castable while moving.

At level 14 (when you get Drain life) I think you should totaly forget about shadowbolts, unless you are at full HP and mana. A casting sequence should look like this: -Send voidwalker, cast Curse of Agony, cast Corruption, cast Immolate and then stat draining. If you reach full healt, use liftap.
I am not pretty sure it is the best way, my only warlock was my first character so I was kinda newbish too at that time.
Hope I helped with what I wrote here.

Btw: do the voidwalker quest if you didn't :P

Man,just look at 2 first threads on this forum for the playstyle.

As for spec, you cant "ruin" it because you can always re-spec and change your talents again.
For lvling usual spec is affliction, here, look at this link.
Follow this build ,by the time you're 50 you'll know what to spec next.

Take care

First and foremost - Welcome to Wow!

In regards to you questions...

Leveling with destruction is not impossible although it can be very difficult at times. When compared to the other trees (affliction and demonology), the margin of error is a lot smaller and the downtime is many times longer due to mana issues. You pewpewpew like a mage...but without the ability to conjure up free water and get out of harm's way (nova, blink, etc). We do have fear, but that can get you in a lot of trouble if the feared mob runs into another mob. You could fear juggle, but that is another topic...

In regards to your friend's advice on leveling. I must also politely disagree...some great, "class-defining" skills and talents aren't available until past level 10. I would recommend at least getting to level 20 before you decide whether or not to continue with the lock (or any other class for that matter). I will admit that the first couple of levels with a lock can be painful, but things change immensely once you get instant corruption, life tap, drain life, and the voidwalker.

Check out the Warlock Playstyles Compendium - very informative in regards to early level talent and skill strategy. I personally drain hunted or drain tanked when leveling my warlock.

Hope that helps.

I thank you all i know what im doing now.

I just didnt understand why DoT was any good so i used the destruction spell.

I just easily did a quest I couldnt do by sending my imp to drag it slap 3 DoT spells on him and just fear him and watch him die.

I actually laughed..

Thanks alot guys.

Edit I did read it but it didnt really spell it out how my newbyness needed.

I wanted to keep the loc from the start and now that i basicly understand how to work him its amazing.

This is what I have worked towards since I first found the guide, I'm now lvl 62 and stack 550+ shadow damage. I am more likely to run out of mobs to kill than either mana or health, looting mobs actually slows me down :)

'Some affliction warlocks choose to spend their time while leveling collecting +Shadow Dmg and +Spell Dmg over all other stats. The goal is to reach 200+ shadow spell damage by level 40 and 250-300 damage by 60 To do this, you will need almost exclusively armor "... of Shadow Wrath". The advantage of doing so in favor of Stamina and Intellect is that it boosts the damage and healing of drain life which offsets the loss of health and mana. Especially since a skilled warlock should be able to balance out his life-tapping and life draining to keep himself over 50% in both health and mana at all times, thus rendering large amounts of either unnecessary due to having no downtime anyways.

If enough damage is accumulated, then a phenomenon the writer of this section calls "God of Death Mode" appears. In GoDM the combined damage of Corruption, Curse of Agony, and Siphon Life is enough to kill an enemy, as a result a warlock can cast 3 instant casts while moving between targets to rapidly kill enemies. This allows the warlock to take on 4-12 enemies depending on level and gear, while sometimes draining life on one enemy to maintain his health, although it is not always necessary thanks to siphoned health. This is a much faster method of grinding and questing since there is no time wasted stopping to cast or on spell push back. Dark pact greatly facilitates this due to no longer having to worry about using health for mana.'

The only time I use a destruction spell is when something makes me made and while I watch it die I just tend to over due it with the spell. :)
