#1 Aug 12 2008 at 11:19 AM Rating: Decent
ok so i made a warlock now level 11, and i dont know which spec i want to be.

i was thinking destruction but i use my dots more than my straight up damage spells, so now i want to know whats a better leveling spec? people tell me afflic till felguard. now i want to know is demonology spec viable for raids? or is destruction and afflic? are they all equal bringing some abilities to endgame? if you could also link some builds to, i would greatly appreciate it, thanks

You have 1 point. Spec isn't really a major concern just yet. ;)

But... I would suggest, regardless of late- or end-game spec that you start with these points for leveling/early grinding. Basically just to make your drain-hunting with the voidwalker easier and faster.

Later on you will respec. But until you have more talent points to play with, some basic Affliction points is what is considered most efficient.

Good luck!

The best way to level a warlock is go ALL affliction until you can get a felguard (lvl 50)
From lvl 50 to 70, stay demonology, with a little of either side (i found affliction more helpful)
typical grinding build (at lvl 70 - what you should work towards after getting felguard) -http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warlock/talents.html?tal=0502222200000000000002050030133250103531351000000000000000000000
the skills in afflic are up to you - put them in destruction or different afflic tanlents, i just find these are handy.

In raids, there is almost no viability for demonology spec, as the dps is just not good enough (the tradeoff being more health, survivability skills and buffed demons) because you do not use pets in raids - any cleave or AoE spell will destroy them immediately (imps are ok, but i find that dark pact is more useful than having the imp cast fireball)

Demonology can be very viable in raids if used properly. There a lots of buffs to yourself deep in the Demonology tree that give you Spell Damage for having your demon out, and the felguard does very respectable damage. Once your Hit Capped, but don't have enough +Crit and Spell Damage to make Destro a viable raiding build, the Felguard Spec is one of the better specs.

The 2pcT5 bonus and Void Star Talisman(drops in T5 Content) greatly increase his survivability. For trash it is recommended to turn cleave of, or use it manually if the CC is far enough away. Enemies cleaving is not an issue, as pets always DPS behind the mob if someone else has aggro. They are also not affected by many boss abilites like Spout from Lurker. How do you think BM hunters do so well with their pets?

Pet management is critical to making the Felguard work in raids. You must pull him out when the Melee pull out, and send him back in at the right times in order to maximize DPS. However, when played properly, and at the right gear level, it can be one of the best raiding specs available.

The build doesn't have the raid support that Afflic is often used for, Shadow Embrace/Malediction. Imp HoT would be a solo/PvP talent and since you don't have Fel Concentration anyways it doesn't matter. Here would be a pure raid build. Imp CoA is a waste, as CoD is better anyways when you aren't on CoE or CoR. Malediction with CoE would be a raid buff for all casters and Shadow Embrace makes everyone take 1% less damage (and acts as a debuff for Soul Siphon). Here would be a good solo talent setup. I personally use the solo talents and am doing fine on the meters. However, we have another lock who puts CoE on, that's why I'm not picking up Malediction. Imp HS is optional, having multiple different ranks of it allows more HSs.

Leveling Affliction is just as fast as Felguard (in some cases faster, if you like the playstyle better). Drain Hunting (Send VW in, DoT up) till 30, Drain Tank (Fel Concentration 5/5, Affliction, DoT up then drain life. Higher levels you can DoT 3 up then HoT with imp HoT.) through till 70. Even when going Felguard, generally you should wait till 56-58 for him to get Demonic Frenzy.

No matter what spec you end up with, you'll still most likely use DoTs.

You can always respec later, but improved corruption should be ideal to pump 5 points into. It'll make your corruption talent an instant cast, which will help a lot in early leveling.

Perfect response; at level 11 this makes sense. I wish I would have had that information early on for my level 30 lock. He's demonology but I may change...

As far as people talking about the relative merits of Aff v Demon at 70, don't worry about it, as far as I can tell you can respec so easily once you get to those levels it doesn't mean alot to worry about it.

PS. Playing a lock at 30, with the steed, is one of my most gratifying experiences ever. Did I do anything special to earn the best mount in the game but play a 'lock? NO, but I still love it. I'd pay some gold to see me on the mount with one of my minions at my side...

I'm also a BE so Vanity is a Racial.

You can have your minion out while you're mounted if you, after entering a battleground, is mounted when it ends. When you're transported to whichever city you joined up in, you'll be on your mount with your pet out. Of course, it only lasts until you've dismounted, but it still looks neat.
