Minion Macro Key SwitchFollow

#1 Aug 12 2008 at 9:35 AM Rating: Decent
So I was noticing the other day that I have this awesome macro which does just about everything I could ever want to do with my pet, for each pet. Yes, Dark Pact with Imp, Seduce with Succy, Spell Lock with Felhunter, I never use Voidwalker... well extremely rarely. I had a thought however... what if I could write a macro for each of the pets individually and then somehow swap the button whenever I have that pet summoned. In essence, I start casting Felhunter and my 'q' key becomes the felhunter macro key with all my felhunter abilities on it.

Felhunter is the main reason I want to be able to do this now, reason being is that I need access to a quick key for Devour Magic (self) and Devour Magic (target or focus), while maintaining the same key for Spell Lock. I don't really need help writing the macros but instead need help figuring out a way to swap the action bar button, which my key is bound to, and I don't know if there is a mod that can do this for me or whether it can even be done... I thought it best to ask around and see if someone could help.

I started at WowWiki for tons of useful macros.

This was the first one I used for an "all pet ability" macro. Now, I've added focus functions and removed the Felguard, but this is the basic version:

#showtooltip
/cast [pet:Voidwalker,combat] Sacrifice; [pet:Succubus,target=focus] Seduction; [pet:Felhunter,target=focus] Spell Lock; [pet:Felhunter,target=player,modifier:ctrl] Devour Magic; [pet:Felguard,target=target] Intercept

You could add [target=mouseover, noharm, modifier:alt] or similar for Devour Magic. Really depends on your set up and play-style. But remember, there is a limit to how much you can fit into one macro.

Good luck.

Unfortunately there is a terrible limit to how much I can fit into one macro... 255 characters just isn't enough, but I figured out a better way for me. I have different play styles depending on which Pet I have out, and therefore it changes almost everything I do. So what I decided to do was to remove the Action Bar Key numbers generally '1 thru =', and instead replace them with my letters set up and have 'z' be my summons button, one button summon whatever pet I need, while also switching my action bar. The letters should stay the same but the macros which they correspond to should be different. I'm going to try this and see how it works, and if it works then I have a way to also tailor my pet summons and action bars to various different types of encounters, although I'll have a stupid ton of macros it should be worth it, if I had the time and patience I'd learn to write a UI that auto updates based on pet and what I have targetted but I'm too lazy for all that. (it is possible but would take a few mods and alot more scripting and such than I know)

I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.

Okay so I did what I was suggesting and it's working wonderfully, I took some cues from the programming studying I've been doing and named the Macros I'm using in multiples based on their usage, e.g. 'Pet.Succubus' has my macro for her which focus and seduce the focus, clear the focus by holding ctrl while setting a new one at the same time which then attempts a seduce on that target, the macro functions to only seduce a focus if it is harmful, I wish it could look to see if the target can be seduced before allowing the macro to try and run that function but alas I don't know if that's possible. At any rate, when I go to summon a different pet the macro I have set for that now also changes my action bar to the appropriate bar, I have action bar 1 for Felhunter as it's what I use most, when grinding in areas where I'll have to face Alliance (I play horde), I have action bar 2 as Succubus because I use her second most, especially if I think there are rogues around, and lastly I have action bar 3 for Imp, which is for my solo grinding in a fairly safe area or near guards and such. Each bar is different in the spells I have on it and the style for which I play, although I'm still working on it to perfect the system I feel like a druid or warrior switching stances now, which is kind of strange really. I kept my bottom left and bottom right multi action bars for placing randomly useful things that Necrosis doesn't handle, such as trinket macros, my summon macro (which is now bound to 1), an elixir/potion macro (generally I use elixirs out of combat so it switches between them based on whether I'm in combat or not, and if I need to use a pot outta combat for some reason I can hold down shift). Basically everything I need without having to get write a UI specifically for myself, which would have taken too long.

If you find yourself interested in doing this it's simple if time consuming and I suggest doing it while on flights to various locations, start by writing every macro you can while on flights or waiting for BGs and such, then move all the keys you have bound at some point on a long flight (like to Un'Goro from Orgrimmar... which takes forever btw). I did it in one day but devoted about 2 hours to writing new macros and rewriting alot of stuff, I would think it would only take about 20 minutes if I had already written my macros. Alright, enough long windedness from me now.
