So, it seems I'm going to be mage tanking IC tonight, and I'm not sure how much stamina I'm gonna need. I know hit capped is important, so I'm gonna be ready to go there, but I think in my good stam gear, I just barely break 13k buffed. Enough? More?

Edit: I reread my guild's chosen strat, and 15k it is...hrm...

psst...remind your hunter not to MD with Arcane Shot...
#3 Aug 11 2008 at 9:36 AM Rating: Good
You don't need a MD as a mage tank.

Be hit capped, I wear about 12k hp + a nightmare seed for the pull (that's an easy extra 2k hp on you for the pull).

I just run in with a BoP on me spamming spellsteal, the moment that I get it I fireblast and cast some scorches to get enough threat, two of the other tanks tend to get misdirects.

For interrupts we have found it works amazingly well for an elemental shaman (if you have one) to be in charge of interrupts (because of the 6 second cooldown) with a mage in reserve just incase. What we do is have a /whisper macro to go back and forth between us to let us know when we cast it, when our CD is up or CD is down, 1-shot them every time (since the 2nd downing) barring bad RNG stuff. I normally did interrupts as the mage while tanking as well. just make sure you don't attack the priest... her stuff hits hard.

So there is a raid target that can be mage-tanked? This appeals to my Gnomish sense of adventure. My gear isn't in the same zip code as Poldaran's, so this would be a ways off...but please tell me more of this mage-tanking...

Do a search for Krosh Firehand (high king mulgar fight) or High Nethermancer Zerevor (Illidari council fight)

I believe are the only two people that you tank.

I did Krosh for a while, it was fun. The normal mage tank came warrior for some alt gear. I had a couple problems at first, but once you get used to doing it, it's fun.

Intentionally, anyway. Lately, I seem to end up tanking Drek and Galv in AV, even when I'm trying to behave myself. Apparently, mobs take it personally if you crit for 7k+ when they are at 75%. Who knew?

The reason they suggest 15k is just for the pull, but i really never worried about that, after a couple of months there was only twice i got a full arcane blast on me, and both times my combat log said i had the dampen first but it happened so close together i ate the shot. I always got a bop when the hunters put their misdirects on the tanks, and would follow an imp up, as soon as the imp gets aggro and the mage starts casting on him i would run past the imp and spellsteal, from there its easy. I usually ran about 12.5k health and didnt go any higher than that for the pull.

The problem with the imp thing is that all our warlocks have had RL creep up on them at the same time. So now, we're running warlock-free. Which means that, even despite the change to CoE...Poldaran no longer has CoE. Smiley: frown

I ate a couple of full bolts at first, but now that I've gotten the pull down, I think I'm good. I believe I'm gonna drop the couple of old Krosh-tanking greens I've been using in exchange for my better, more +hit capable gear. This'll mean I can get by with only 1-2 points in Arcane Focus, which'll mean that I can not have to respec every week for this one fight. Smiley: yippee

I have to be honest, this fight is much easier from a mage-tank perspective than the Maulgar fight was. The buff lasts so long and is recast so often that I don't have those nice, panicked moments where I know I'm gonna take a big bolt. I actually found myself kinda bored, so I'm gonna try to convince them to keep the priestess in range so I can CS something.

Here's hoping my guild gets there before WotLK, would love to dust off my Maulgar tanking gear for another fight.

I managed to get up to 14.5k raid buffed last time I tanked Maulgar, so I'd be interested to see what I can get to with my gear now.

A well, got a few bosses to go yet.

Good Luck Poldaran.

I'm generally right at 12k health, sometimes even a bit less. Depends on your healers.

Oh, and make sure the mage has the buff up to steal. It does drop off occasionally while setting up. Running in and tanking without it hurts >.<

I would expect to use different gear than the standard +stam greens by that time. I put on a few pieces of stam/pvp gear and keep my 4pc t6 bonus while I tank it. making sure to stay as close to arcane hit cap as possible (I keep a single point in arcane focus for 3/47/11)

I was for the most part. But I was desperately trying to hit 15k thinking I needed it, so I was using two of my old greens in addition to everything else. Won't be bothering with them next time.

If you have an ele shaman have him drop the wrath of air totem by you for the pull for the +hit if you need it as well, just remembered that.

For my stamina gear I have Commendation of Kael'thas and Commander's Badge. Is it a better idea to use normal trinkets or are the stam ones acceptable? (Not that I'll be tanking council anytime soon :P)

I was using a Crimson Serpent and a Commander's Badge with no worries at all about threat, so I'd imagine you'd be fine with those.

I normally use the commander's badge + violet badge.
