Skill with weapons.Follow

#1 Aug 08 2008 at 4:07 AM Rating: Decent
I'm working on developing my lvl 20 warlock, and wanted to know if there was any way to lean how to wield two handed swords, and/or duel fighting. I would like to be able to use my skills with dagger and swords in conjunction with each other for maximum melee damage. Yes iI do know that 'locks aremeant to be long range fighters, but I solo a lot and am trying to be as versitile as possible. (mostly so I don't have to keep for miles and miles to find my corpse) Any answers to this would be very apprcieated.

You'll do better and die less if you stay ranged and use spells. Read the stickies here. They have a couple of leveling builds where you go plow through enemies and pretty much not die unless you're doing something stupid.

Also, Warlocks can't dual wield weapons, and can't use 2-handed swords. So to answer your question, "No."

weapons are stat enhancers for warlocks period.
Even in melee range you should be casting a spell, drain life, drain soul, shadow bolt, something anything except hitting with a weapon if you can't cast a spell than use a wand instead of a weapon. Fighting with a weapon is gimping yourself imo.

If your gonna melee, your gonna spend more time running. Wand does more DPS then swinging a sword, and casting our spells does more than wand.

point 1: You will never (absolutely never) learn how to wield two-handed weapons, just like you will never be able to use any distance weapon other than a wand.

point 2: Even the measliest of your damage spells will do more damage to an opponent than any weapon you can use at your level. That's because warlocks get no benefit to melee damage from attributes or talents.

point 3: Since you can't do a lot of damage with a melee weapon, you are best served by using weapons for any attribute gains they provide. At your level, you are looking for +STA first and foremost and +INT as a secondary.

Then go and tell people who are just starting the game that you have a secret ninja Warlock style that bases its damage off of the Square Root of the Mean of the three attributes. Also make sure this character is named uberwinzer, that will get you into the best raiding guilds on the server... they like secret styles...

Don't be mean, this is the kind of thing that start melee hunters on their road of idiocy.

Melee hunters usually already have something wrong with them in the first place. They're already toast when they're unable to find sarcasm when it's stuffed into them by the bucketload. And Moon you missed something.

I made sure my warlock got to the max on his sword skill so whenever I'm in Kara and we get to the wyrms in the library that are immune to magic I can gloat about my MASSIVE 80 melee crits!

There, fixed. :)

Anyway, as people already said, stick to spell casting, you will do more damage and be more effective. Versatility is not the Warlocks best attribute, damage causing is.

If you have a problem with mobs attacking you and therefore need the urge to melee them, send your Voidwalker (blue spirity thing) FIRST, done with CTRL+1 as a default IIRC (or from the bar above your normal bar if using the original UI, at the left-down corner of the screen), wait a few seconds, and then start casting spells, preferably DoTs (Damage over Tims spells) such as Corruption, so there won't be a damage spike to pull threat from the Voidwalker.

Also, try to stay at range from mobs attacking your Voidwalker, it increases the likelihood they'll stay on him. That's a threat range thingy, don't wanna complicate things and go into it, though I will if you wanted to, I think it's better to focus on more basic things for now.

When you are satisfied with the DoTs ticking on your opponent you can continue wanding (make sure you have one equipped, and you are using the 'Shoot' command from the general page of the spellbook), or casting spells with direct damage. Which to use is for your own taste. The former being cheaper and the latter faster (usually anyway).

The best way for you to stop corpse running is not taking damage, seriously. Use the Voidwalker for that.

Hope I helped,
Yuval.

Spellstone is useful in arenas ,esp vs other locks and spriests, get dotted to the max then just use it and remove them all.

FIRESTONE, DAMNIT.

So you hit mobs with your firestoned (Enchants the main hand weapon with fire, granting each attack a chance to deal 116 to 174 additional fire damage.) staff instead of using spells, right? How many corpse runs do you make?

Actually, I was more poking fun at the fact that we have melee enhancements, but have no actual use for them.

Also, I try not to use staves as a whole on my lock. :P Swords ftw.

Oh, and I never go into an arena or battleground without a Spellstone.
