If you want to be prot spec'ed you need to be using a shield. There's really no getting around that. You best abilities require it.

The pvp weapons are marginally ok for tanking, but there are generally better. Grom'Tor's charge from a fairly easy quest line and Inuuro's blade from SSO rep are two very good, easy to obtain tanking weapons that many people use until Sun Eater or King's Defender drop for them.

Thanks for that but i still dont understand why what u have suggested is better as looking at the pvp weapons the stats look better could u explain why your suggestion are a better weapon than the pvp as then i would understand as i have been building up the pvp armour as well so i take it that is not that great either out side pvp. I have a shield. I came up through the lvl as a solo so have not done much with groups thats why i have poor gear but i am finding it a pain now anyway an explantion as to the diff between the pvp and normal gear would be greatly appreciated--- The Bad

The short answer is the def stat, pvp gear has none. Every prot war needs to get to at least 490 def for their tanking gear so as to not get killed by bosses from crushing blows. PvP gear is only good for the stam on it for new tanks, PvE gear has the def, dodge, parry, expertise you need to take less hits and thus live longer.

Though the merc glad sheild is a great sheild to use as there are not many options for sheilds, especially pre-raid.

since you said you were prot spec'd, people are assuming you want to tank. if that's the case, you need to do a LOT of research about tanking - read stickies, etc. there is a big difference between dealing damage and dealing threat (and surviving).

i think you might want to start out as a DPS warrior until you get quite a few instances under your belt. spec DW fury and those weapons will do fine for you.

First thing you need to do is read the tanking guide somewhere on this forum to find out how to spec your talents and equip your toon. Then you need to get "tanking gear". PVP gear has no defense, dodge, parry stats whatsoever on it and thats what you need to survive. You dont deal damage as a tank you recieve it. You deal threat. You are the one that has to hold the mobs onto you as the dps does the damage. I assume your a new tank, get the felsteel gear off the AH. It's cheap and a very good blue set. Dont worry about socket bonus and stick stam enchants on it.Find a fast one hand tanking sword. By that I mean a sword with def, stam stats and the like on it and with a speed under 2.00. I do like the merc shield for tanking and maybe the merc shoulders are good for now also.Tank in defensive stance only and use a shield. Defense stance gives you more threat then the other 2 stances. Your shield will add significantly to your stamin, armor and blocks. You will need that defensive rating at 490 to be uncritable. But all in all please read the tanking guide on here, you will learn a lot about what it takes to be a tank and how to tank.

Ok, everything everyone has said here about tanking stats on weapons and gear is 100%. But I can't help myself questioning your reasoning behind going for the weapons you were mentioning.

I'm going to assume that, as Prot spec, you would like to weapons to dual-wield in order to run instances as non-prot (sounds very wierd to me, but hey, I'll have to run with it, as it's the only reason I can see you want to dual wield as prot)

Bare in mind that any PvP weapon below 2 speed is an off hand weapon ... you can't have 2 of them and dual wield them. On the off chance you did indeed realise this, could you please elaborate on what you mean by "MG 1.6 sec mace" .. I'm having difficulty figuring out what you mean there. If you meant the Merciless Gladiator mace .. again, it's off hand only, and secondly, it's 1.5, not 1.6 (minor detail, I know, but quite relevant ito identifying what weapon you're talking about)

If, however, you're talking about the 2.6 mace (as opposed to the 1.6 mace), then fine, those 2 will do you ok for dual wielding (2x2.6 weapons will be even better though, but it is a lot more expensive), although as mentioned before, you're probably better off speccing fury if that's the style of play you're after ... some people can do decent DPS as prot spec ... but that's because they've got very good dps gear.

There, I'm sure I've covered all possibilties regarding answers to your question, I hope it helps. And yeah - if you want to tank, please don't go into an instance expecting to tank while dual-wielding ... that would be tragic, especially seeing as though your 41 point talent in the prot tree requires a shield.
