Wands and resistsFollow

#1 Aug 07 2008 at 9:28 AM Rating: Decent
I've been playing Wow for years...but never a caster. I'm giving it a try with a mage...but...I can't seem to hit anything when I use a wand. I'm level 13 and I'm using a wand that causes Arcane Dam. I get resists about 70% of the time. HELP!

Keep going and your wand skill will rise to match your level. You have to keep in mind that unlike your spells, wand resist rate is impacted pretty much by your wand skill alone (I think), so it'll be underlevel until you use it a fair bit.

It is the same as when you try to use an under skilled weapon. You miss a lot until you get more proficient at it.

exactly, think of it as shooting a spell through an object, but instead of level differential you depend on you weapon skill to match the mobs you are fighting. Similarly to starting a new sword/staff at level 20 and leveling it from level 1, leveling that weapon will have a lot of misses until the skill level comes up.

Keep using your Wand to finish mobs at the end of a fight. Even just two/three shots at the end of every fight should keep you at max skill lvl, and your Wand will be much more efficient.

Thank you my robed friends. I had not thought of it as a "weapon", now it all makes perfect sense.

Also: don't worry about the wand much. After lvl 20 or so you'll stop using it for anything but stat bonuses.

Not true. Although it plays a very minimal role in the downfall of your foe, it is a great tool to help conserve that extra bit of mana at the end of a fight. Instead of finishing with a Frostbolt/Fireball, use the Wand, and save that amount of mana for the next fight, especially if it's a mob that runs. No point in using a spell on something that has no threat to you (unless he's running into a crowd of other mobs. Fire Blast ftw).

I carry a wand mostly for stats, but I use it whenever I don't have the mana to do anything else. Even in BGs, sometimes a massive fight or vile mana stealing Lock pets will drain all my mana. Running isn't really an option, so I blast away with the wand until somebody kills me or I regen enough mana to cast again.

Went and did a bg with a pally friend. He was keeping me alive in a battle, but I had no mana, no evocation, no gems left (and I refuse to use pots in a bg). So I wanded. lol.

Totally viable option. And you guys are right, it's definitely a good backup tool in BG, especially when you have 100+ DPS on it.
